Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, according to Football Insider.
The 33-year-old has been identified as a serious option to fill the backup goalkeeper role at Old Trafford this summer transfer window.
Altay Bayindir is expected to depart the club, leaving United short of experienced cover behind first-choice stopper Senne Lammens.
Lammens, who joined from Belgian side Royal Antwerp, has established himself firmly between the sticks, keeping eight clean sheets in 32 Premier League appearances last term.
Andre Onana, who has struggled since arriving from Inter Milan, is also considered surplus to requirements and spent last season on loan at Trabzonspor.
Johnstone spent time on loan several times as a young player before permanently leaving United in 2018, meaning a return would represent a nostalgic full-circle move.
The 6ft 4in Englishman joined Wolves from Crystal Palace and has been used as a rotational option, with relegated Wolves open to selling him this summer.
He still has two years remaining on his current deal at Molineux Stadium, so United would likely need to pay a transfer fee to secure his signature.
Johnstone’s experience and imposing physical presence could make him a shrewd acquisition to support Lammens across a demanding schedule next season.
However, the goalkeeper has suffered fitness problems in recent years, and Michael Carrick’s side will need to carefully assess that risk before making their move.
Tom Heaton remains at the club after signing a one-year extension, though United are clearly keen to add more experienced goalkeeping cover to the squad.
Having qualified for next season’s Champions League, United are planning significant investment this summer to give Carrick the tools needed to compete on all fronts.
The club have also reportedly agreed in principle to sign Ederson from Atalanta, further strengthening their options in the goalkeeping department.
Whether Johnstone ultimately returns to the club where his career began remains to be seen, but United’s interest in the experienced stopper appears genuine and serious.
