Liverpool are moving quickly to reshape their attack this summer, with Andoni Iraola now at the helm and significant work needed on the left flank.
According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool are in talks with representatives of Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, a 23-year-old widely regarded as one of Europe’s most exciting attacking talents.
Williams does not come cheap, with a reported £86m release clause attached to the Spanish international, making this a significant statement of intent from the club.
Arsenal, Manchester City, and Manchester United are also monitoring Williams closely, meaning Liverpool face serious competition if they are to secure his signature this summer.
The 23-year-old lit up international football when he starred for Spain during the 2024 Euros, helping his nation dispatch England in the final with considerable confidence.
Journalist Zach Lowy has hailed Williams as “world-class,” and pundit Wayne Rooney once remarked, “He reminds me of Cristiano Ronaldo when Cristiano was young.”
His progress has stalled somewhat over the past two seasons, with Williams managing just six goals and three assists in La Liga this campaign, and ten goal involvements the year before.
Per-90 statistics do show promise in other areas, however, with Williams registering 3.57 successful dribbles and 6.35 duels won, both figures bettering those of Luis Diaz in the current campaign.
Liverpool are also pursuing RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, with The Redmen TV’s Dan Clubbe noting that the 19-year-old has “the finishing ability of Mane,” a tantalising prospect for supporters.
The potential arrival of Williams would complement the emergence of 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha, who has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign and is widely tipped for a bright future at Anfield.
Ngumoha cannot be expected to shoulder the burden of starting twice a week every week, meaning Liverpool need experienced and high-quality cover on the left side of attack.
Williams bears similarities in style to Diaz, operating with a measured explosiveness that keeps defenders guessing before bursting into dangerous areas at pace.
Diaz has undeniably outperformed Williams statistically this season, posting 0.55 goals and 0.51 assists per 90, compared to Williams’ figures of 0.32 and 0.16 respectively.
However, Diaz is nearly six years older than Williams, and the Spaniard still possesses the raw talent and physical tools to develop into a truly elite winger with the right environment.
If Liverpool can land both Williams and Diomande alongside the blossoming Ngumoha, they would possess genuine attacking firepower to challenge for the game’s biggest prizes in the coming seasons.
