Manchester United have reportedly entered the race to sign Barcelona midfielder Dani Olmo, joining Premier League rivals Arsenal and Chelsea in pursuing the Spanish star.
Spanish outlet Fichajes broke the news, claiming United joined the race “in the past few hours” and are prepared to outbid both London clubs to secure Olmo’s signature.
Barcelona have placed a £60m price tag on Olmo, with the Catalan club looking to strengthen their financial situation following a season marked by economic constraints.
Despite Olmo’s contract running until 2030, Barcelona appear willing to cash in on the midfielder as they seek to resolve their ongoing financial difficulties.
Arsenal and Chelsea were initially considered the frontrunners for Olmo’s signature, with the player reportedly attracted by the prospect of playing in London.
The appeal of the English capital’s attacking football style had seemingly given both Arsenal and Chelsea an edge in negotiations before United’s sudden interest emerged.
Manchester United’s desire to strengthen their creative midfield is understandable given Bruno Fernandes, who broke the Premier League assist record last season with 21 assists, is approaching 32 and out of contract in 2027.
Mason Mount has failed to provide adequate backup cover in the No.10 position for Michael Carrick’s side, having struggled with persistent fitness problems since his move from Chelsea.
Olmo is primarily a creative midfielder but brings considerable versatility, capable of operating in a box-to-box role, covering the flanks, or even filling a false nine position.
Chelsea currently rely solely on Cole Palmer in the central attacking midfield role, making Olmo an attractive option to provide genuine competition and depth in that position.
Arsenal’s need for Olmo appears less pressing, with Martin Odegaard, Eberechi Eze, and Ethan Nwaneri all capable of operating in the No.10 role for Mikel Arteta’s squad.
