Manchester United and Chelsea are locked in a transfer battle to sign Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall, according to journalist Nicolo Schira.
Hall developed through Chelsea’s Cobham Academy, which currently has at least four players in England’s 26-man World Cup squad who passed through at various stages.
Former Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel handed Hall his senior debut in a 5-1 FA Cup third-round win over Chesterfield on January 8, 2022, during which he provided an assist.
At 17 years and 122 days old at the time, Hall became Chelsea’s youngest-ever starter in an FA Cup fixture, marking himself out as a generational talent from an early age.
His Premier League debut followed ten months later in a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle, the club he would join the following summer in a move that transformed his career.
Since arriving at St James’ Park, Hall has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable and consistent fullbacks, earning four England caps along the way.
Despite averaging an impressive 6.53 duels won per game last season, the 21-year-old was left devastated by his omission from the World Cup squad, raising serious questions about his future at Newcastle.
Schira reports that both Manchester United and Chelsea have now expressed genuine interest in signing Hall during this summer transfer window.
Newcastle, however, are described as reluctant to sanction his departure, having already proved tough negotiators following Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool.
The Magpies are expected to demand well above Hall’s £34 million Transfermarkt valuation before even considering selling one of their most important defensive assets.
Chelsea’s need for a left-back has become urgent after the club officially confirmed the sale of Spanish international Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid this summer.
Manchester United face a similar problem, with Tyrell Malacia confirmed as departing and Patrick Dorgu expected to continue operating further forward under Michael Carrick.
That leaves Luke Shaw as United’s only senior option at left-back, making the pursuit of Hall a pressing priority for the Old Trafford club heading into the new season.
Both clubs are now poised to compete seriously for Hall’s signature, but Newcastle’s firm stance on his valuation could make this one of the summer’s most complicated transfer negotiations.
