Manchester United have reportedly made contact with Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, signalling a serious push to bolster their midfield this summer.
The move comes following Casemiro’s departure, with the club widely understood to be prioritising a significant overhaul of their engine room ahead of the new season.
United have already agreed a deal to sign Ederson from Atalanta, with the move expected to become permanent following the conclusion of his World Cup campaign with Brazil.
Michael Carrick’s side are planning to bring in at least one more midfielder and could pursue an additional signing if Manuel Ugarte, who has struggled since joining from PSG, eventually departs.
United initially targeted Elliot Anderson, but Manchester City are now in pole position for that deal, forcing the club to pivot toward alternative targets.
Mateus Fernandes has been identified as a primary target, though negotiations with relegated West Ham United have proven difficult, with the Hammers reportedly demanding as much as £80m for the Portuguese midfielder.
Transfer expert David Ornstein has reported that Tottenham Hotspur have also entered the race for Fernandes, adding further competition for United as they look to strengthen.
Amid that backdrop, United have turned attention toward Tchouameni, with Carrick’s side holding talks with the player’s representatives before his well-publicised dressing room incident with Federico Valverde.
Tchouameni is valued at around £60m by Transfermarkt and is entering the final two years of his contract at the Bernabeu, giving Real Madrid leverage to demand a substantial fee.
The 26-year-old stands at 6ft 2in and is a natural defensive midfielder, though he is equally capable in a box-to-box role and can also provide cover at centre-back when required.
He has firmly established himself as one of the best central defensive midfielders in the world at both club and international level, making him a potentially transformative addition at Old Trafford.
Whether United can navigate the financial and competitive hurdles to secure Tchouameni’s services this summer remains to be seen, but the early groundwork appears to have been laid.
