Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race to sign West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, according to respected journalist David Ornstein.
The 21-year-old Portuguese international has attracted significant attention this summer following a string of impressive performances for West Ham during the recently concluded season.
Fernandes originally arrived in England as a relatively unknown player from Sporting, quickly making his mark at Southampton before the Saints were relegated.
He then joined West Ham last season, only to suffer the same fate as his previous club, with the Hammers also going down this campaign.
Despite back-to-back relegations, Fernandes has emerged as one of the most coveted midfielders in the current transfer window, with Manchester United previously reported to have opened talks to sign him.
Tottenham have now joined the chase, with Ornstein reporting that the north London club have formally expressed interest in the young Portuguese star.
West Ham hold Fernandes under contract until 2030, giving them strong leverage in negotiations, and Ornstein reveals in The Athletic that the club have placed an £80m valuation on the player.
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi is reportedly pushing the club to sign Fernandes alongside Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali, with Ornstein clarifying that the pursuit of one will not hinder efforts to land the other.
Fernandes recorded an impressive 5.98 tackles, 5.46 ball recoveries, and an eye-catching 10.95 defensive contributions per game last season, underlining his tenacity and quality in midfield.
Spurs have already been active in the market this summer, securing free transfers for Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth and Andy Robertson from Liverpool, with Jan Paul van Hecke also confirmed as joining from Brighton and Hove Albion.
The club were outrun, outscored, and largely outperformed for much of last season, making the push for combative, experienced midfielders a clear priority for De Zerbi heading into the new campaign.
Tottenham are set to face Brentford in their opening game of the new season, adding further urgency to the club’s ambitions to strengthen the squad as quickly as possible.
With Manchester United also firmly in contention, the battle for Fernandes’ signature is shaping up to be one of the most compelling transfer stories of the summer window.
