Tottenham Hotspur are shaping up for one of the most ambitious transfer windows in recent memory as they target serious midfield reinforcements this summer.

The north London club have already brought in Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson on free transfers, before moving to secure Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton.

Despite that early activity, Spurs are willing to spend significantly more as they look to avoid another disastrous league campaign following back-to-back finishes in 17th place.

Sandro Tonali has emerged as the club’s primary midfield target, with Spurs lodging a £75m opening bid that was rejected by Newcastle United.

Reports suggest Tonali has already agreed personal terms and is open to linking up with manager Roberto De Zerbi, with both men sharing roots in Brescia, Italy.

West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes is another leading option, with sources indicating the young midfielder is closing in on agreeing personal terms with Tottenham despite formal club-to-club talks not yet beginning.

However, a prominent Spurs insider has now revealed that Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga have both been added to the club’s midfield recruitment shortlist.

Camavinga, now 23, has been described by football writer Harvey Diamonds as “one of the best 6s in world football,” and the statistics from the 2025/26 league season back up that assessment emphatically.

Per 90 minutes last season, Camavinga recorded 3.8 tackles made and 7.1 duels won, comfortably outperforming both Tonali, who won 3.8 duels, and Fernandes, who won 6.0 duels.

The Real Madrid midfielder also posted a pass accuracy of 92%, significantly better than Tonali’s 84% and Fernandes’ 87%, underlining his quality in possession.

Camavinga drew 1.9 fouls per 90 minutes and completed 0.5 through balls, edging both rivals in those metrics and demonstrating his ability to be a physical and creative force.

Fernandes, aged just 21, ranked first among U21 midfielders in Europe’s top seven leagues for defensive duels won, interceptions, and possession won, while finishing second for progressive passes completed.

Tonali, at 25, has been described as a complete midfielder approaching his prime after several phenomenal years at Newcastle United.

Yet in the context of what De Zerbi needs from a sitting midfielder, Camavinga’s numbers suggest he may represent the superior option, particularly in the defensive phases of the game.

Playing regularly in one of the most demanding club environments in world football at Real Madrid also means the Frenchman arrives battle-hardened and ready for the intensity of Premier League football.

Tottenham are determined to act quickly in this window, and the addition of Camavinga alongside other targets could signal the start of a genuine rebuild at the club.
