Tottenham Hotspur have entered formal talks to sign Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo this summer, according to Italian journalist Nicolo Schira.
Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi is said to be a keen admirer of the Dutch international and has identified Gakpo as a priority attacking target.
Schira reports that Tottenham are now preparing to submit an ‘important’ formal offer to Liverpool as they look to accelerate a deal.
The north London club have already offered Gakpo a five-year contract, with a prominent role in De Zerbi’s setup among the incentives being dangled before the player.
Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 for a fee in the region of his £51m Transfermarkt valuation, arriving with considerable expectations.
During his time at PSV, he won two Dutch Cups, two Dutch Super Cups and an Eredivisie title, establishing himself as one of the most dangerous forwards in the Eredivisie.
He also announced himself on the global stage at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, scoring three goals and catching the eye of numerous top European clubs in the process.
His finest season at Anfield came in 2024-25, when he contributed 18 goals and seven assists across all competitions as Liverpool lifted the Premier League title.
Last season proved more difficult, however, with a shot accuracy of 47.76% and a conversion rate of just 8.04% contributing to the perception that Gakpo underperformed.
Despite those struggles, he still recorded 15 goal contributions and led the Liverpool squad with 112 shots, suggesting his overall involvement remained high throughout the campaign.
His World Cup form for the Netherlands has also helped restore confidence in his abilities, with Gakpo netting two goals and providing one assist in the tournament so far.
Liverpool’s signing of Victor Muñoz, combined with their pursuit of another wide attacker, has raised legitimate questions about whether Gakpo has a long-term future at Anfield.
De Zerbi has a strong track record of developing technically gifted attacking players, and there is a belief that he could help Gakpo sharpen his finishing and improve his efficiency numbers.
If Tottenham’s offer is deemed acceptable by Liverpool, and Gakpo is open to the move, this could develop into one of the more significant transfers of the summer window.
