Manchester United and Chelsea are both reportedly interested in signing Sporting CP left-back Maximiliano Araujo this summer transfer window.

The 26-year-old Uruguayan has become a key figure at Jose Alvalade Stadium since arriving from Toluca, winning a Primeira Liga title and a Taca de Portugal.

Araujo demonstrated his attacking threat last season, scoring seven goals and providing six assists across 45 appearances in all competitions.

He also contributed defensively, helping Sporting keep nine clean sheets throughout the campaign, underlining his value on both sides of the ball.

His strong performances have earned him a regular starting berth in the Uruguayan national team setup heading into the World Cup.

Manchester United sent scouts to watch Araujo in action during Uruguay’s 2-2 draw against Cape Verde in the World Cup, according to a Portuguese report via TEAMtalk.

Chelsea’s interest stems partly from the departure of Marc Cucurella, who has moved to Real Madrid, leaving the Blues in need of a new left-back option.

Araujo’s current contract runs until 2029 and contains a £69 million release clause, meaning Sporting are under no pressure to sell him this summer.

Despite that, the player has reportedly expressed a desire to leave the Portuguese club in order to take the next step in his career.

Manchester United’s need at left-back is well documented, with Luke Shaw’s persistent injury problems and Patrick Dorgu considered better suited to a winger’s role.

Chelsea currently have Jorrel Hato as a left-back option, but the youngster is still developing and the club may seek a more experienced alternative to complement him.

Araujo is described as an attack-minded left-back who can also operate as a left wing-back or out-and-out left winger when required by his manager.

His profile combines pace, physicality, and a strong work rate with reliable defensive contributions, making him an attractive option for clubs competing at the highest level.

At 26 and in the prime years of his career, Araujo represents a significant but potentially worthwhile investment for whichever club wins the race for his signature.
