Tottenham’s pursuit of midfield reinforcements has taken a complicated turn with Manchester United emerging as a serious rival for West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes.

Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg reports that Manchester United remain determined to sign the Portugal international despite Tottenham’s ongoing interest.

Plettenberg adds that personal terms are not expected to present a problem for United if a deal can be agreed with West Ham, with negotiations said to be ongoing.

The update represents a significant concern for Tottenham after weeks of positive reports surrounding their own pursuit of the 21-year-old midfielder.

Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi has made strengthening the middle of the park a priority this summer, with two new midfielders targeted before the new Premier League campaign begins.

Fernandes joined West Ham from Southampton last summer in a deal worth more than £40 million, signing a five-year contract at the London Stadium.

The Portuguese midfielder made 36 Premier League appearances last season, scoring three goals and providing four assists while regularly operating in a box-to-box role.

He also produced one of West Ham’s goals of the campaign, a long-range strike in the victory over Sunderland that was later voted the club’s Goal of the Season.

Fernandes earned his senior Portugal debut this year after progressing through the country’s youth ranks, having previously gained experience with Sporting CP and Estoril.

His energy, progressive passing and ability to carry the ball through midfield have attracted interest from several leading clubs, with Tottenham pushing hardest before United stepped up their efforts.

Recent reports suggested Spurs held productive discussions over a potential deal and remained optimistic about reaching an agreement with West Ham, making United’s intervention a timely blow.

Newcastle star Sandro Tonali also remains firmly on Tottenham’s shortlist, despite the Magpies rejecting an opening offer worth around £80 million.

Newcastle are understood to value the Italy international at well over £100 million and have shown little willingness to negotiate below that figure.

De Zerbi is understood to want both experience and energy in midfield this summer, which explains Tottenham’s simultaneous interest in Tonali and Fernandes.

While Tonali would bring proven quality and Champions League experience, Fernandes represents one of the Premier League’s brightest young midfielders after his excellent West Ham campaign.

With United now stepping up their efforts, Tottenham may need to act quickly to win the race for one of De Zerbi’s top targets.
