Chelsea have made contact with Benfica over a deal to sign highly rated Norwegian left winger Andreas Schjelderup this summer.

The 22-year-old joined Benfica from Danish club Nordsjaelland in January 2023 and has since made 86 appearances for the Portuguese club.

Across those appearances, Schjelderup has registered an impressive tally of 15 goals and 15 assists, establishing himself as one of Benfica’s most dangerous attackers.

One of his most memorable contributions came in Benfica’s 2024-25 Portuguese League Cup final, where he scored the winning goal against rivals Sporting Lisbon.

His reputation has grown significantly over the past six months, with Jose Mourinho among those to have praised him, describing the winger as a “great talent.”

Schjelderup finished the most recently concluded campaign with ten goals and seven assists, continuing to demonstrate his quality as a consistent attacking threat.

He also featured prominently for Norway at international level before their elimination by France in the final group-stage fixture of their recent tournament.

According to Record via Sport Witness, Chelsea have now made contact to discuss a potential transfer to Stamford Bridge, though talks have not yet advanced significantly.

Benfica hold a release clause worth around £86m in Schjelderup’s contract, which runs until 2028, but are reportedly open to selling for a fee closer to £34m.

Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, AC Milan, and Como are also said to be monitoring the situation, meaning Chelsea face significant competition for his signature.

Chelsea ended the most recent Premier League season having scored just 58 goals, and also endured a troubling five-game streak without scoring late in the campaign.

While Joao Pedro was the club’s highest scorer, wide players such as Alejandro Garnacho, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, and Pedro Neto largely underperformed throughout the season.

A winger of Schjelderup’s proven creativity and goal threat could provide a meaningful upgrade, and his reported £34m valuation may represent strong value in the current market.
