Chelsea are closely monitoring Brazilian attacking midfielder Gabriel Bontempo ahead of a potential summer swoop, according to a report from RTI Esporte.
The 21-year-old Santos starlet is considered one of Brazil’s brightest young talents, possessing qualities that align with Chelsea’s strategy of recruiting prospects with high resale value.
Bontempo is contracted at the Vila Belmiro until 2028, and Santos have placed an £84m valuation on the exciting midfielder amid reported interest from the Blues.
RTI Esporte claims Chelsea are looking to send Bontempo on loan to Strasbourg, with the prospect of a full transfer to Stamford Bridge further down the line.
Chelsea have built one of the most sophisticated scouting networks in South America since the Clearlake-led takeover in May 2023, expanding operations across Brazil, Argentina, and Ecuador.
In recent years, the club has recruited players such as Gabriel Angelo, Andrey Santos, Estevao Willian, Denner Evangelista, and Deivid Washington from the Campeonato Brasileiro alone.
Aaron Anselmino, Kendry Paez, and Deinner Ordonez have also arrived from clubs in Argentina and Ecuador, underscoring the club’s sustained commitment to the South American market.
However, Chelsea’s youth-driven model has come under serious scrutiny, with the club qualifying for the UEFA Champions League in only one of the last four seasons.
Off-field concerns have compounded the pressure, with the team receiving eight red cards, highlighting a worrying lack of cohesion and leadership both in the dressing room and on the pitch.
The club’s statement at the end of last season promised a shift in approach, which has already led to the arrival of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa and reported interest in Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix.
Chelsea have also reportedly agreed to deals for Harrison Bettoni from Wigan and highly rated Scottish centre-back Alfie Osborne from Hearts, continuing to blend experienced additions with younger prospects.
While Bontempo represents a genuinely exciting addition for the future, his £84m price tag remains steep, and it remains to be seen whether Chelsea will negotiate a lower fee or redirect funds toward more pressing first-team priorities.
