Chelsea are reportedly eyeing a move to sign Como centre-back Jacobo Ramon, according to The Athletic, as Xabi Alonso continues reshaping his squad.
The Blues currently possess a large defensive roster including Levi Colwill, Benoit Badiashile, Mamadou Sarr, Jorrel Hato, Josh Acheampong, Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo, Aaron Anselmino, and Axel Disasi.
Despite having so many centre-back options available, several players within that group have failed to consistently deliver at the required level.
Badiashile has been plagued by inconsistency over recent seasons, while Sarr has struggled to adapt since his arrival from Strasbourg.
Adarabioyo has found regular game time elusive after joining on a free transfer, and Fofana’s career at the club has been repeatedly disrupted by fitness problems.
Disasi appears to be surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge, and Anselmino, Hato, and Acheampong remain young talents still needing time and experience to develop.
Colwill is working his way back from a serious knee injury, while Chalobah has been linked with a departure from the club this summer.
The Athletic report that Chelsea are seeking to bring in two new centre-backs this summer, though any activity in that area remains dependent on player sales being completed first.
Chelsea have already made a formal enquiry for Maxence Lacroix, identifying him as a serious option, but Ramon has also emerged as a genuine target on the club’s wishlist.
The 21-year-old Ramon moved to Como from Real Madrid last summer, signing a contract that runs until 2030, and Transfermarkt values the Spaniard at around £25m.
Standing at 6ft 5in, Ramon is a right-footed defender described as quick, technically sound, and comfortable playing out from the back with strong defensive contributions.
He made a significant impact in Serie A, scoring twice and keeping 15 clean sheets across 37 appearances in all competitions, helping Como qualify for the Champions League.
His profile and attributes appear well suited to the possession-based system that Alonso is looking to implement at Stamford Bridge this season.
