Arsenal’s summer transfer window has been defined by frustration, missed opportunities, and a rapidly inflating market that has reshaped the landscape for every major club.
The Gunners were expected to spend heavily after winning the Premier League, with elite attacking reinforcements firmly on the agenda for sporting director Andrea Berta.
Instead, Arsenal have been left empty-handed on multiple fronts, with both Jeremie Monga and Morgan Rogers slipping through their fingers in the space of weeks.
Manchester City hijacked the move for Monga, while Chelsea agreed a remarkable £117m deal for Rogers on Saturday evening, leaving Arsenal supporters furious and deflated.
The Rogers situation is particularly painful given how close the move appeared at several stages, with manager Mikel Arteta investing significant personal effort into the pursuit.
Arteta had a direct phone call with Rogers himself, while Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice were enlisted during the World Cup to pitch the Emirates as his next destination.
Josh Kroenke also held discussions with the player’s camp, personal terms were close to being agreed, and Rogers was reportedly open to making the switch.
Everything changed on 2nd July when Elliot Anderson completed a £116m move to Manchester City, which prompted Aston Villa to dramatically revise their valuation of Rogers upward.
Villa’s demand for £117m was no coincidence, as they wanted a package worth more than the fee received for Anderson, and Chelsea duly obliged where Arsenal refused to follow.
Arsenal had been able to sign Rogers for a fee of between £80m and £90m in June, making the final outcome a deeply frustrating one for Arteta and the entire recruitment team.
While the decision not to match the inflated fee is defensible given the distorted nature of the current market, Arsenal must now move quickly to identify and secure credible alternatives.
Berta has several options under consideration, including strikers Julian Alvarez and Eli Junior Kroupi, while winger targets Yan Diomande of RB Leipzig and Bradley Barcola of PSG have both been explored.
One name that stands out above the rest is Athletic Club’s Nico Williams, a player who has been on Arsenal’s radar since Spain’s European Championship triumph in 2024.
Williams subsequently added a World Cup winners medal to his collection, cementing his status as one of the most exciting wide attackers in world football at present.
The 22-year-old has long harboured ambitions of joining Barcelona, but that route appears closed after the Catalan club signed Anthony Gordon earlier this summer.
With the Barcelona door shut, a move to Arsenal for Williams, valued at around £77m, now carries genuine momentum and could represent outstanding value in the current market.
Compared to the £117m demanded for Rogers, Williams offers a proven international pedigree at a significantly more sustainable price point for Arsenal to consider seriously.
Berta and Arteta will be acutely aware that time is pressing, and securing a statement signing before the window closes must now be the absolute priority for the club.
