Manchester United have entered into initial discussions with Roma over the signing of French midfielder Manu Kone, according to L’Equipe.
The Red Devils have already moved to strengthen their midfield this summer, having recruited both Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans ahead of the new campaign.
Despite those two additions, United remain determined to bring in further reinforcements in central midfield and have identified Kone as a priority target.
L’Equipe report that talks were first held with the player’s representatives before United opened preliminary discussions directly with Roma, though no decisive phase has been reached.
Arsenal and two other Premier League clubs are understood to have registered interest in the 25-year-old, but United currently hold the upper hand in the race.
Kone himself has given the green light to a potential move to Old Trafford, which represents a significant boost for the club’s pursuit.
The Frenchman had an outstanding season in Serie A, playing an instrumental role in Roma qualifying for the Champions League after a seven-year absence from the competition.
His World Cup performances with France further elevated his stock, with Aurelien Tchouameni’s hamstring injury opening the door for Kone to partner Adrien Rabiot, chosen ahead of Warren Zaire-Emery.
Statistically, Kone was impressive throughout the Serie A campaign, completing 90% of his passes while averaging more than 4 ball recoveries, 5 duels won, and almost 2 tackles per league appearance.
Santos and Tielemans are considered more attack-minded central midfielders, making Kone an attractive option for United given his ability to provide greater defensive resolve in the centre of the park.
Roma have raised their asking price following Kone’s World Cup exploits and are now demanding at least £51 million before agreeing to sell the midfielder this summer.
Arsenal could refocus their attention on Kone if they decide against pursuing Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes due to the cost involved in that particular deal.
United are still assessing their options and have not yet made a definitive decision on whether to proceed with a formal offer for the Roma midfielder.
