Chelsea are exploring a move to sign England international centre-back John Stones on a free transfer from Manchester City, according to The Athletic.
The Blues have history with the Barnsley-born defender, having been heavily linked with signing him during Jose Mourinho’s tenure at Stamford Bridge.
After Mourinho guided Chelsea to their fourth Premier League title, he sought to strengthen his backline, with Stones identified as a primary target for the London club.
The defender ultimately stayed at Merseyside before joining Manchester City the following season for a then-record fee for a defender.
Stones proved his worth at the Etihad, making 295 appearances and winning six Premier Leagues, five Carabao Cups, three FA Cups, two Community Shields, one UEFA Champions League, one UEFA Super Cup, and one Club World Cup.
Now 32 and out of contract, Stones represents a potentially shrewd free transfer option for Chelsea as they look to reshape their defensive options this summer.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is focused on adding experience to the squad, as demonstrated by the club’s pursuit of Sunderland’s 34-year-old midfielder Granit Xhaka.
The Athletic reports that Chelsea are seeking two new centre-backs, having made enquiries for Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix alongside shortlisting Stones as a key target.
Injury concerns surrounding Stones are legitimate, with the defender having managed just 20 appearances across the past two seasons due to persistent fitness problems.
Despite those concerns, his 257 Premier League appearances and proven ability to perform in midfield make him an attractive option to bring leadership into Chelsea’s setup.
Stones demonstrated his enduring quality at the recent World Cup, making five appearances for Thomas Tuchel’s England side, including starts against Norway in the quarter-final and Argentina in the semi-final.
Chelsea will be hopeful that signing an additional centre-back alongside Stones will allow the club to carefully manage his minutes and protect him from further injury setbacks.
His experience, versatility, and pedigree at the highest level offer Chelsea something they have arguably been lacking, both on the pitch and in the dressing room, for some time.
