Manchester United are reportedly pushing to sign Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Hugo Larsson, with competition expected from Premier League rivals Newcastle United.
The Red Devils have found themselves stretched for midfield options after Casemiro’s departure and Manuel Ugarte suffering a serious knee injury this summer.
United moved quickly to address the problem, securing Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa during the current transfer window.
Santos has already begun pre-season work under manager Michael Carrick, while Tielemans has taken a break after representing Belgium at the World Cup.
Despite those two additions, United are said to be really keen on bringing in a third midfielder, with Larsson firmly in their sights.
Newcastle United are also circling the 22-year-old Swede as a potential replacement for Bruno Guimaraes, who has attracted interest from Arsenal and could leave St James’ Park.
Frankfurt are under no immediate pressure to sell Larsson, whose current contract runs until 2029, but the Bundesliga club are open to a deal at around £51m.
Standing 6ft 2in tall, Larsson is a versatile right-footed player equally comfortable in defensive midfield and box-to-box roles, possessing strong technical ability and excellent passing range.
The Sweden international joined Frankfurt from Malmö in 2023, initially filling a rotational role before stepping up to register eight goal contributions across 47 appearances last season.
Fitness issues did disrupt his campaign at times, but his overall profile suggests he could develop into a key player at the highest level.
United have also been linked with Ayyoub Bouaddi, Sander Berge, and Alex Scott as part of their broad midfield recruitment search this summer.
Whether the club makes a firm approach for Larsson before the window closes remains to be seen, but their reported level of interest suggests a concrete move could follow.
