Arsenal and Chelsea are locked in a transfer battle to sign Barcelona midfielder Marc Bernal, according to reports from Caught Offside.
Chelsea have been working hard to rebuild their squad this summer under the guidance of manager Xabi Alonso following a difficult campaign last season.
While the Blues had previously focused on recruiting highly talented young players, they have shifted attention toward adding more experienced names to their ranks.
Chelsea are reportedly keen on signing Danny Welbeck from Brighton and Hove Albion and Jordan Henderson from Brentford as part of that rebuild.
Despite interest in Henderson, Chelsea have also earmarked Barcelona’s Bernal, valued at around £26m on Transfermarkt, as a serious midfield target for this summer.
The West London club have been monitoring Bernal’s progress closely before deciding whether to make a formal move for the 19-year-old.
However, any deal will prove far from simple, as Arsenal have also entered the race to sign the talented Barcelona midfielder.
Complicating matters further, Bernal’s contract at Barcelona runs until 2029, and the club have no intention of selling him, with a staggering £428m release clause in his deal.
The youngster himself is reportedly keen on continuing his development at Camp Nou rather than seeking a move away at this stage of his career.
On Arsenal’s side, the Gunners are looking to bolster their midfield options following Christian Norgaard’s difficulties in breaking into Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up last season.
Arsenal have been linked with several midfielders this summer and have accelerated their pursuit of Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes, though Bernal has now emerged as another target.
Bernal is a 6ft 4in left-footed defensive midfielder who can also provide cover in a box-to-box role when required by his manager.
The teenager has shown glimpses of his qualities in La Liga in recent seasons, primarily featuring as a rotational option within Barcelona’s squad.
His profile is well-suited to Arteta’s possession-based system at Arsenal, making him a potentially shrewd acquisition should either London club find a way to negotiate a deal.
With Barcelona holding all the leverage and the player content to stay, it remains to be seen which club, if either, will push hardest to sign him.
