Chelsea are exploring a potential move for Atalanta centre-back Giorgio Scalvini, with super agent Ali Barat reportedly in contact with the club over the 22-year-old defender.
Italian journalist Luca Cerchione has reported that Barat, who recently became Scalvini’s new agent, has been active in finding his client a suitor this summer.
According to Cerchione, Barat has already received contact from Chelsea regarding the highly-rated Atalanta defender, suggesting genuine interest from Stamford Bridge.
Atalanta are reportedly demanding £34 million for Scalvini, a notably lower figure than the £52 million valuation attached to him when Chelsea were first linked last summer.
Scalvini has been described as an ‘outstanding’ young defender who developed into one of Italy’s most promising centre-backs under Gian Piero Gasperini after joining Atalanta’s academy in 2015.
Standing at 6ft 4, the Italian offers obvious aerial presence, but his technical ability to carry the ball into midfield and play through pressure sets him apart from typical defenders.
Those qualities appear to align with what Xabi Alonso demands from his defenders, particularly in Chelsea’s build-up play from the back.
Last season, Scalvini recorded 24 Serie A appearances, 1,935 minutes, three goals and one assist as he regained some form and momentum.
However, any pursuing club would need to scrutinise his injury record carefully, as he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in June 2024, forcing him to miss Euro 2024.
Scalvini then suffered a serious shoulder injury shortly after returning from that ACL problem, while muscular, ankle and adductor issues have further disrupted his playing time.
Chelsea’s defensive situation also complicates the picture, with Trevoh Chalobah, Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile all potentially available for sale this summer.
Mamadou Sarr has additionally been linked with a loan exit, and Levi Colwill has returned after missing most of last season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury of his own.
Chelsea have already moved significantly in the transfer market this summer, with Maxence Lacroix completing a reported £52 million move from Crystal Palace.
The Blues received an FA fine of £10 million and a suspended two-window registration ban relating to 74 historical breaches from Roman Abramovich’s ownership era.
The ban remains suspended until June 30, 2027, meaning Chelsea can continue signing players provided no further relevant breach activates the sanction.
An enquiry from Chelsea regarding Scalvini does not confirm a formal offer has been submitted, but his age, technical profile and Serie A experience clearly make him an appealing long-term target for BlueCo.
