Manchester United are making ‘contacts’ to sign Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall, according to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, revealed that United consider Hall a ‘top target’ and have begun making enquiries to understand the details of a potential deal.
Hall is valued at around £34m by Transfermarkt, and Newcastle have him under contract until 2029, meaning they hold strong leverage in any negotiations.
The Magpies are not in any rush to sell the young defender, having already parted ways with Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali this summer.
Bruno Guimaraes has also been heavily linked with a move away from St James’ Park, which could make Newcastle even more reluctant to lose another key player.
United’s interest in Hall stems from growing concerns over their current options at left-back, with Luke Shaw entering the final year of his contract and continuing to struggle with fitness issues.
Patrick Dorgu is available as an alternative, but the player has shown his best form further forward rather than operating as a fullback in recent months.
Academy prospect Harry Amass can also cover the left side of defence, though United appear keen to bring in a more experienced long-term solution to the position.
Hall came through Chelsea’s youth academy before joining Newcastle on an initial loan deal in 2023, with the transfer made permanent the following year.
The 20-year-old is technically gifted, left-footed, and comfortable playing out from the back, with the ability to thread passes through tight defensive lines.
He is also strong in one-on-one defensive situations and efficient when dribbling past opposition players in congested areas of the pitch.
Hall added silverware to his growing reputation by helping Newcastle win the EFL Cup, demonstrating his ability to perform in high-pressure matches.
Whether United can persuade Newcastle to part with one of their most promising defensive assets before the window closes remains to be seen.
