Everton have reportedly held discussions over a potential deal to sign Manchester United forward Ethan Wheatley, according to The Athletic.
The 20-year-old came through the Red Devils’ youth system before making his first-team debut a couple of years ago, but has struggled to break into the starting line-up at Old Trafford.
Wheatley has gone out on loan on several occasions over the past few years in order to play regularly and continue developing his career.
He featured for Michael Carrick’s side in the first pre-season friendly against Wrexham last month, but failed to secure his place in the squad for matches against Rosenborg and Atletico Madrid.
With his existing contract running until 2028, Manchester United may be open to selling Wheatley this summer to maximise the profit from his departure.
The Athletic report that Everton’s interest comes with an unusual intention, as the Merseyside club plan to integrate him into their U21 setup rather than the first team immediately.
The 6ft 2in right-footed striker is considered a talented prospect, and could represent a shrewd long-term acquisition for Everton should they complete a deal.
It remains to be seen whether Everton will follow up their initial discussions with a concrete approach to sign the youngster before the summer window closes.
Everton currently have Beto and Thierno Barry as their senior striking options, with Barry scoring eight goals in 41 appearances across all competitions in his debut Premier League campaign after joining from Villarreal.
Beto, who joined from Udinese in 2023, made 11 goal contributions in 40 appearances across all competitions last term, and his contract is set to expire at the end of next season.
With Beto’s deal running down, Everton may look to sell him this summer rather than risk losing him for free the following year.
The club have also been active in other areas of the squad, purchasing Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough and making Tyrique George’s loan move permanent this summer.
