Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris is determined to bring in a marquee defensive addition before the summer transfer window slams shut this month.
The Black Cats have been heavily linked with Toulouse left-back Dayann Methalie as they look to replace Reinildo as their first-choice option on the left side of defence.
Sunderland submitted an offer of £28m for the 20-year-old, but Toulouse rejected the bid and are holding out for a fee of £30m before allowing him to leave.
Methalie is reported to have indicated his desire to join the Black Cats if an agreement can be reached, though no deal between the clubs has materialised yet.
However, signing the young Frenchman would represent a significant gamble, particularly given his complete lack of experience in English football at any level.
His attacking output in Ligue 1 last season was encouraging, with two goals and 2.21 expected assists across 27 appearances suggesting genuine creative potential down the left flank.
The concerns lie at the other end of his game, where Methalie lost 60% of his duels in the French top-flight throughout the 2025/26 campaign, a troubling record heading into the Premier League.
With 2.1 fouls committed per game and a ground duel success rate of just 39%, the physicality and intensity of English football could ruthlessly expose those defensive weaknesses.
Fortunately for Le Bris, a potentially superior alternative has emerged, with Senegalese outlet DSports reporting that Sunderland are pursuing West Ham United left-back Malick Diouf.
The report states that the Black Cats have already made contact with West Ham and submitted an opening offer, though that bid was rejected by the Championship club.
Diouf is valued at around £40m, with both Sunderland and Brentford reportedly vying for his signature as the window enters its final stages.
The 21-year-old Senegal international offers a compelling case for selection over Methalie across virtually every statistical category from the 2025/26 season.
Diouf registered five assists and created five big chances in 32 Premier League appearances, compared to Methalie’s one assist and three big chances in 27 Ligue 1 outings.
Defensively, Diouf also holds the clear advantage, winning 52% of his ground duels and 55% of his aerial duels, far superior figures to those posted by the Toulouse defender.
His disciplinary record was also considerably cleaner, committing just 0.9 fouls per game compared to Methalie’s 2.1, suggesting a far more controlled and composed defensive approach.
Crucially, Diouf has already demonstrated that he can handle the demands of Premier League football, which immediately eliminates the adaptation risk that comes with signing Methalie.
Despite West Ham’s relegation to the Championship last season, Diouf’s individual performances proved he belongs at the top level of the English game.
Le Bris would be signing a known quantity in Diouf, a player whose qualities are already proven in the division where Sunderland will be competing next season.
Sunderland should move decisively to win the race for Diouf’s signature ahead of Brentford and make the West Ham man their primary left-back target this window.
