Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly agreed personal terms with Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, according to a report from TEAMtalk.
The north London club have been active in the transfer market this summer as they look to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new season.
Spurs currently have Mathys Tel and Wilson Odobert as their specialist left-flank options, with Mohammed Kudus also capable of providing cover in that position.
However, the squad depth in that area has been severely tested, with Odobert sidelined for an extended period due to a serious knee issue.
Kudus has compounded the problem further, having been ruled out through injury for more than six months, leaving the position short of reliable cover.
Tel has shown promise during pre-season matches, but the young forward still needs his game time managed carefully to ensure he develops to his full potential.
Those circumstances have made the pursuit of Gakpo a priority, with Tottenham identifying the Dutch international as the ideal profile to address their left-flank vulnerabilities.
From Gakpo’s perspective, reports suggest his desire to move stems from concern over his Liverpool future, with the Merseyside club working on a deal to sign Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain.
The prospect of losing his starting place has reportedly made Gakpo open to leaving Anfield this summer, and he has been attracted by the opportunity to play under Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi.
De Zerbi’s attacking and possession-based style of play is considered an appealing fit for a forward of Gakpo’s technical quality and direct running ability.
Securing the Liverpool star for a reported £60m would represent a significant statement of intent from Tottenham, who are building steadily under De Zerbi’s direction.
