Chelsea are making significant progress in negotiations with Monaco over a move for Senegalese midfielder Lamine Camara, according to journalist Santi Aouna.
The 22-year-old has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting midfielders currently playing in French football’s top division.
Camara developed at the prestigious Génération Foot academy before making his way into senior European football, following a path taken by several promising Senegalese talents.
His breakthrough came after joining Metz B in February 2023, with his performances in the reserve side swiftly earning him a first-team call-up.
Just two months after signing, Camara made his senior debut for Metz in a 3-0 Ligue 2 victory over Bordeaux, signalling his readiness to compete at a higher level.
Although his involvement remained limited during the final weeks of that campaign, he became a regular starter the following season after Metz secured promotion to Ligue 1.
He featured 31 times during the 2023-24 Ligue 1 season before completing a transfer to Monaco, where his development has continued at a rapid pace.
Camara’s physical presence and strength in duels stood out particularly last season, but he also demonstrated considerable composure and quality in possession throughout the campaign.
His passing numbers were especially impressive, as he averaged 51.6 accurate passes per 90 minutes in Ligue 1, a figure marginally higher than Enzo Fernández’s 50.6 per 90 in the Premier League.
That comparison underlines Camara’s ability to contribute meaningfully when his side controls the ball, and helps explain why Chelsea have identified him as a priority target.
With Aouna reporting that talks are advancing, the final transfer fee remains a key question, as Monaco are expected to demand a sum above Camara’s current £34 million Transfermarkt valuation.
