Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly plotting a surprise late move to sign Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez before the transfer window closes tomorrow.
The North London club have been looking to strengthen their goalkeeping options following a disappointing start to the new campaign between the sticks.
Tottenham allowed Guglielmo Vicario to join Juventus this summer and subsequently brought in Martin Dubravka as cover for first-choice stopper Antonin Kinsky.
However, the 23-year-old Kinsky has struggled badly in the opening weeks of the season, conceding six goals across three matches without keeping a single clean sheet.
Those numbers have clearly alarmed the Spurs hierarchy, who are now exploring the possibility of adding more quality and experience to their goalkeeping department before the deadline.
According to TEAMtalk, Roberto De Zerbi’s side are planning to make a surprise move for Sanchez, with intermediaries close to the player already exploring potential destinations for him.
Chelsea are prepared to sell Sanchez having signed Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa, with the Argentine even making his debut against Brighton on Sunday, helping his new side win 4-3.
Sanchez knows De Zerbi well from their time together at Brighton and Hove Albion, which could make a reunion at Tottenham an attractive proposition for the Spanish goalkeeper.
Valued at around £19m by Transfermarkt, the 28-year-old still has a contract running until 2030, meaning Chelsea are in a strong position to demand a sizeable transfer fee for his services.
Since his move to Stamford Bridge from Brighton, Sanchez served as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper and was part of the squad that won both the Club World Cup and the Conference League.
The 6ft 6in stopper is comfortable playing out from the back, strong in the air, and capable of operating as a sweeper-keeper, though he has also shown a tendency to make costly errors at times.
Despite those inconsistencies, Sanchez brings genuine experience and know-how that could prove valuable for Tottenham as they look to address a clear weakness in their squad before the window shuts.
Whether Spurs can get a deal over the line in the final hours of the transfer window remains to be seen, but the interest is reportedly genuine and moving quickly.
