Chelsea have made official contact with AS Roma over the potential signing of French midfielder Manu Koné, according to journalist Santi Aouna of Foot Mercato.
The Blues are actively strengthening their midfield following reports that Enzo Fernández is close to joining Manchester City, with Koné emerging as a primary target.
Club-to-club negotiations between Chelsea and Roma are said to be underway, marking a significant step forward in what could become a major summer deal.
Roma are believed to value Koné at around €55m, with the Italian club holding firm on their asking price as they attempt to retain the France international.
Koné, who is 25 years old and contracted with Roma until 2029, has quickly established himself as one of the more dependable midfielders in Serie A since his arrival at the club two years ago.
The Frenchman made 37 appearances across all competitions last season, contributing two goals and three assists to demonstrate his ability to impact games at the highest level.
His eye-catching 92.7% successful pass rate this season underlines why Chelsea and several other clubs are now chasing his signature with real urgency.
Koné also impressed at the 2026 World Cup, where his performances for France brought him to the attention of a wider audience across Europe’s biggest clubs.
Manchester United had previously been interested in signing the midfielder, but ultimately moved on to complete the signing of Carlos Baleba from Brighton instead.
Real Madrid and several other Premier League clubs are also tracking Koné, meaning Chelsea face serious competition if they are to secure a deal in the current window.
Chelsea’s pursuit of Koné is running alongside their reported interest in Lamine Camara, though that deal is said to have cooled significantly over the past 24 hours.
With funds expected to be freed up through the sale of Fernández, Chelsea appear well placed financially to meet Roma’s valuation and get a deal across the line.
