Liverpool held serious interest in Paris Saint-Germain left-back Nuno Mendes before ultimately moving on to an alternative target, according to The Athletic.
The 24-year-old Portuguese defender originally joined PSG on loan from Sporting CP in 2021, with the move made permanent the following year.
Mendes took time to adjust to life in Paris but ultimately developed into one of the most highly regarded left-backs in world football.
During his time at PSG, Mendes has collected five Ligue 1 titles, two Champions League trophies, and a string of other major honours.
In 40 appearances across all competitions last campaign, the left-back scored six goals and registered seven assists while helping his side keep seven clean sheets.
His club performances have also cemented his place as a key figure in the Portugal national setup at international level.
Liverpool’s then-sporting director Richard Hughes was reportedly keen on signing Mendes and believed the club had a realistic chance of landing him.
Those hopes were ended when Mendes signed a new contract with PSG in February 2025, forcing Liverpool to look elsewhere for left-back reinforcements.
The Reds subsequently turned their attention to Milos Kerkez, securing the full-back’s signature from Bournemouth in a move that ended their pursuit of the PSG star.
However, Kerkez has continued to look shaky this season, adding further uncertainty to Liverpool’s situation at left-back heading into the coming transfer window.
The situation is further complicated by Kostas Tsimikas entering the final year of his current contract, leaving the position short of long-term security.
With questions remaining over both options currently at the club, Liverpool may find themselves returning to the left-back market in the near future.
