FIFA & The Poppy: We Will Remember This

Guten Ahbend.

I can say this in jest you see only because of the actions of those who were cut in half by machine gun fire, choked by mustard gas, blown to smithereens or disemboweled by bayonet. Blimey Aitch, tad heavy for a Saturday night, old man…

Well, I tell you this: I just enjoyed a cracking firework show on the Stray in Harrogate. And that was a show! But before I left the house I made sure I had my Poppy on. Then I get home and get a Tweet from a chap – regular or and indeed occasional readers – may recall. Remember a chap by the name of ‘This Is Sammy’?

Well he wrote a superb piece which I was very happy to run out on this blog about the whole David Baddiel fiasco which was HERE.

Well Sammy has unsurprisingly hit another bulls-eye with a piece about ‘the Poppy’ and FIFA which is lengthy and so I would ask you to click HERE.

You know me, I can be an intolerant/flippant git. But stuff like this is important. I hope you afforded it a minute or two and enjoy a great read about a deeply important subject.

And you can let ’em know how you feel! http://www.fifa.com/contact/form.html

    ‘2 from 8′ to ’22 from 8’.

    Redknapp for England.

When was the last time we took 22 points in 8 games?

Most of this season, we have had to play “catch up” due to our first game being postponed and then the next two games were against the Mancs, but slowly we have fought our way up the table, as our rivals for that 3/4 place lose points in unlikely places, and for the first time this season, all our opponents have tough games while ours looks the easiest.

The suspense is killing me, and I am really starting to hate the international break, especially when the England team has so many brats and thugs and other undesirables comprising it’s make-up.

Can someone please invent a time machine so I can fast forward to 8 pm on Nov 21

Delighted with three points purloined at a ground where we’ve been pretty patchy, previously…

I would take issue with anyone who says that this victory was “ground out”, though… I think we just got rather a lot of (probably, well deserved!) luck…

“Ground out” to me implies dour, dogged resistance; matching the opposition tackle for tackle; a final line of defence stretched this way & that, but rarely, if ever, broken…

I didn’t see that, yesterday: 31 attempts on goal?! By Fulham?! That must be some sort of record… we were getting absolutely d*cked, out there!!

Anyway, despite that, I’m a VERY happy Spur: just wanted to make that distinction…

Lucky = Ball hitting post, crossbar, ricochet off ref to clip corner flag.

Ground Out = Goalkeeper making great saves, defenders great blocks, bodies thrown in front of the ball, last ditch tackles & clearances.

Saw very little of the former, apart from their goal (the ping-pong off King & Kaboul) & Walker’s rolling maul. Saw lot’s & lot’s of the latter.

I’d say that tips the balance to ‘ground out’. Like someone else said, if Utd had done that against us, we’d have said that it was what made them Champions.

31 attempts and 41 crosses, compared to our 6, with 2 out and out wingers, plus walker and benny who both bomb on, hows that work?

      decked? docked? ducked?

Getting carried away with the stats I feel. Does a scrambled effort involving three shots and three saves or blocks account for three shots? As Astro has stated, I cannot recall too many of Fulham’s efforts going narrowly past the post, I can recall lots heading for the Thames and Stamford Bridge. They were the home team, losing 2-0, surely nothing but pressure would be applied. I wasn’t happy with our performance, but let’s get it into perspective. Parker was pushed in the back by Sidwell when in a position to score, Walker was clattered and fell, rather than ‘saved’, and Bale put Ade through, who then chose to pass rather than take the shot on. Defoe’s goal was going in, the deflection mattered not a jot-and goals win games and we got three, they didn’t! We allowed them too many opportunities, but 31 ‘attempts’ at goal, do me a favour!

How many times in the past few years have we battered teams, only for their goalie to have the game of his life, I remember a game against Newcastle where we had 35 attempts on goal and we lost 3-2.
Man Utd have won several titles by scratching a win like yesterday, they did it again on Saturday, winning by an own goal and a bit lucky.
If we can improve our 2nd half performances we will be formidable. I think that we are overdue a bit of luck,
It wouldn’t be Spurs without a nail biting finish. we can’t do winning comfortable, can we?
