Are You Cloughie In Disguise? Are You Cloughie, In Disguise?

Good evening.

I tell you this much. I’m dead excited. The appointment of Andres Villas Boas should prove to be a genuine coup. And here’s my thinking behind why…

AVB’s pedigree and limited past successes fill me with hope. Why should they do otherwise? They appear a fair reflection of the man. Add to the mix Sir Bobby Robson and Jose Mourinho – two of the greatest footballing minds of what, the last two generations –  both showed him enormous respect and what have we got? A man that one of the richest men in footballing history – Roman Abramovich – employed.

Why was Chelsea a disaster for Boas then? Hahahahahhahahaha come on. Please tell me you didn’t arrive at this URL via the EDL website.  John Terry, Fwank and Ashley are unmanageable.

AVB wasn’t the first to be spat out of the Tosspot Social Club. Hiddink? Ancelotti? If you say otherwise you automatically assert that Roberto Di Mateo is one of the world’s finest football managers.

So what did Boas actually do in his spell with the Blue Racists, then? Well, try this for size. His tactics were rather sexy . A defensive high line and an emphasis on having the ball.

Retention, speed, attack. Just enough to make it unpalatable for the conditioned old guard who still only know and trust their counter attack methodology. And so where might a system like this flourish? Well did any of you watch the EURO 2012 final? Yeah, Spain.

So what can we expect? The short answer ain’t short. AVB spoke of a project at The Bridge and I have to break it to you that we’ll be facing an approach whereby the system is paramount and the players will have to meld in order to achieve success.

This isn’t as creepy as Scientology I promise you. But it can be as cool to watch as a Tom Cruise movie.

What the appointment of AVB will herald is an intense focus upon commitment, drive, achievement and ambition. The resources of the squad were under exploited by the last bloke. This chap will truly coach. And believe me he will manage.

Why did I mention Brian Clough? Because he was a man that got a second chance from football. Football allows that you know.

And if you were willing to pay close attention, you might learn even more than that yourself …young man.

Agree with all and sundry, loving this and really looking forward to seeing what a young and dynamic manager can do with our young and dynamic squad. rather than a 4 4 2 old school english manager that flirts with a bit of cheeky football, but doesnt actually have the personality or the technical ability to carry it through!
“On you go pav and just run around a bit” is gone and hopefully quickly forgotten. :-) coys!!!!!!!

pj- errrrrrrrrrrrrm Forest, does wickpedia skip that little Cloughie adventure?
HH great piece – I guess what you`re saying is that when Redkrapp told the players to F***ing run around a bit, what they produced between them was well on the way to the system that AVB wants to perfect, therefore he is the natural choice.
On the face of it, not much of a gamble on Levy`s part, more of a common sense appointment. It breaks my heart to hear Hoddle spouting off- doesn`t he realise he`s a club legend who we all want to hold in the highest regard?

    • mattspurs says:

Hoddle probably thinks he should have got the job but surely he can see ‘Arry for the old school dipshit he really is?

Why does Hoddle never appear as a half time guest at WHL?

Hoddle’s now wondering what he did in his past life not to have got the gig for a 2nd time?-Glenda,how you made such a pigs ear of things the 1st time should tell you that!

Oh dear Moe..missed the point. I’m not questioning Clough’s success at Forest, I am saying it was not his 2nd chance. He had poor spells at both Brighton and Leeds. Also Clough had several years at Derby where he took them up from the old 2nd division into the 1st division where he then won the title. AVB had one excellent season with a Porto team who, with the odd exception, win titles most years so they were already a team full of excellent players. So…can you see why I don’t think it’s a good comparison? However if you want to add more to your argument here is a similar article posted a couple of days before this one surfaced

Roy Keane + The Sun = must be true

If we’re going to play like Spain at least we won’t need to buy any strikers :-)

  • Class article – pure class. The parallels between Cloughie’s I’ll-fated reign up North and AVB’s Chernobyl at the Bridge of Bridge are irresistible. The blunt truth is that The Chobam Mafia might be rich but bright they ain’t. The doubters need to hold their peace, this is not a good day for the Gooners.

A decent assessment of AVB’s credentials…. he was never given a chance and Chelski by the players, and John Terry is hardly the social barometer i’d rely on to choose a decent manager

Although i’d like to be positive, I still think this is a gamble by Levy. Although there will be endless speculation about the relationship between him and Redknapp, I would assume that “returning to a more traditional style of football management” was never what he had envisioned for THFC when Ramos had made a right old mess of things. Whatever anyone says about Redknapp, he dug us out of a hole and brought stability and at times some sensational football back to the lane. However, he is not exactly the bloke you would bring in to be a shrewd operator in the transfer market…… you’d want a decent director of football for that, someone like Damien Comolli (Modric, Bale, Berbatov, A&E, Kaboul, Huddlestone)

Levy has made his move back to the company structure that he’s always wanted (DoF and First Team Coach). Lets just hope that this time we’ve got the right men to make it happen

    • Urbane Sturgeon says:

      .
Comolli also brought in Alan Hutton, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Giovani dos Santos, Adel Taarabt, David Bentley and Roman Pavlyuchenko and, I believe, recommended Jol’s sacking for Ramos.

Just sayin…. and enjoyed your post.

      • DS says:

Its a fair point, although to be fair to Comolli you can’t get it right every time….. i’m of the opinion the Redknapp never extracted the best from Bentley or Pav

Levy would seem to want to move to a company structure of buying young to mid-aged talent that can be sold for a healthy profit 3-4 years later if necessary, as well as developing our our homegrown “product”. I applaud this principle, only time will tell if Levy has picked the right man to lead the club forward under the new structure….. history would suggest he is a strewed businessman, but not the best recruiter!
