Good morning.

I managed to watch most of first half of the Red Bulls game before the commentary snuck into my brain and began carrying out a living autopsy… so then I opted to forward fast through the second half stopping only to watch the goals.

There’s no need to get to uptight. We won and it was only a preseason. But there are some areas nevertheless of mild concern.

Bentley I want to work. I never had a hate on for the guy. But if Bale is determined to pursue his vision as a number 9 or 7 or whatever then we will need more than him on the wing to facilitate. He was predictable, slow and generally weak.

Obvious positives were Bale and Gilly. Clearly cut from the same cloth is Harry Kane. I’m hesitant with the youngsters but at this stage it’s clear to see why Villas-Boas is interested in him.

Thud started off poorly, constantly giving the ball away, had a couple of nice touches including the shot then fizzled out. Last night he and Jake were no DM pairing of distinction. Jake didn’t actually do very much.

Nice to see Teemu again  and despite carrying a few pounds and coming back from a nasty injury he hustled and moved the ball about nicely.

And so to the Modric business. Strange one this.

The truth is that some players and/or their agents unilaterally wander off and shake hands on a move to a new club. Then the club’s raunchy Presidents talk to each other and start pointing out really dull stuff like ‘contractual obligations’.

So ickle Luka appears to have been busted. Andrès Villas-Boas told ESPN:

“Luka is doing double sessions on his own in London. When we get back to London I will give some of the players some time off and when we return to sessions we will decide what is best for Luka to do,” Villas-Boas said.

“He is a Tottenham player obviously, but he has to be in good mental condition to return to our training because his colleagues are one level up in terms of preparation and fitness.

“So we will have to setup a program for him that gradually brings him up to the team, that gradually brings him to fitness level – and then see what happens.”

Seems we’re in for Raheem Sterling but Liverpool are unlikely to play ball.

Do you think if we offered ***** in p/e that might be enough to swing it?

Have to say I’ve been a little worried about AVB’s constant, thinly veiled sniping at his last employers, but his comments about Luka have really changed my mind and put a big smile on the face. It’s brilliant – there’s little Luka, plotting how best to go about forcing his move, and in the meantime AVB completely pulls the rug from under his feet putting the pressure on him to work to get back in the team. It’s almost Mourinho-esque the way he’s handling it with a professional arrogance.

Is that he bus from the Italian Job in the picture.

I think he is over rated (and therefore over valued) but I accept that others see it differently. However from a teamate perspective he has surely burnt all his bridges and it would be impossible for him to return to the fold.

I guess we have to trust in Levy to take it to the wire and win but if he waits too long and we either run out of time to spend the £40m or options to spend it on then it would be a pyrrhic victory.

So don’t be greedy Daniel. £30m today would be fine.

depends if you are watching highlights or whole games. Hightlights give you slick passes, the great control, the cheeky flicks – yeah man, he’s a class little gnome when he wants to be.

Full games, show you his standing around, his hovvering about instead of pressuring, his going missing for 20 minute chunks in games where he runs alongside the play not influencing it.

So coming back to being overrated – if you want someone in the game all the time, controlling and making the game tick, then’s he overrated.

If you want a player who sometimes picks match-winning passes, can see gaps no one else sees and helps keep possession when he’s involved, then he’s a very good player.

I suppose it depends what you expect of the man and how much the team has to cover his absent spells. I personally think a VdV on top of his game is more involved and more creative than a Modric on top his game.

Kane tried hard but is a second striker type and still cannot really lead the line.
Everyone whinged about the first 45 but we held the ball for most of it although we didn’t do much with it.
Carrol showed why he reminds me of White and IMHO really has a future asa a MC. Townshend has a temperament problem and shouldbe advised here as he reallyu became red cardpossible stroppy on two occasions although the challenegs were bad.

Looking at the match overall I guess that w ehad 70% possession for the whoile match althougn for only about ten minutes did we lift our pace.
