It was during the decidedly underwhelming FL92 on Sky that Ledley King announced that there was something secretive living under the pitch at White Hart Lane.
What could it be? A cowering Florentino Perez? Arsene Wenger’s chequebook? Maybe even a chained Jonathan Barnett furiously thrashing out a new contract for Bale.
I think few could ever have predicted what the club would later announce. Living beneath the pitch are a collection of animated characters known as ‘turfies’ which form part of an interactive new gaming platform aimed at under 10’s.
Chairman, Daniel Levy, said:
“We wanted to make Tottenham Hotspur Football Club more accessible to a younger age group and reach out to the next generation of fans around the world who will play a vital role in the future of the Club.”
“This platform represents a significant investment and we believe this fun and entertaining concept is the perfect way to engage our younger fans like never before.”
Whether you think this is a cynical marketing indoctrination by the club or simply a substitute for getting out and playing football in the flesh, the turfie concept represents a ground-breaking new initiative by the club. I think any attempt to capture the interests of the very youngest Spurs fans should be applauded, and this project could soon be a huge success.
