Liverpool have set their sights on Club Brugge centre-back Joel Ordonez as they look to replace departing defender Ibrahima Konate, according to TEAMtalk.

Konate has reportedly signed for Real Madrid, leaving the Premier League champions with a clear vacancy at the heart of their defence heading into the summer window.

Ordonez has emerged as the leading candidate from a six-man shortlist compiled by Liverpool’s recruitment department to fill that void.

The 22-year-old Ecuadorian joined Club Brugge from his homeland club Independiente back in 2022 and has since become a cornerstone of the Belgian side’s defensive setup.

He has accumulated over 100 appearances for the Blauw-Zwart, contributing six goals across all competitions and establishing himself as one of the most consistent young centre-backs in European football.

This past season, Ordonez played a prominent role under Evan Lecko as Club Brugge secured their 20th Belgian Pro League title, underlining his importance to the squad.

He also featured in all 10 of the club’s UEFA Champions League matches before their round-of-16 elimination at the hands of Atletico Madrid.

Liverpool’s recruitment staff believe Ordonez possesses the qualities to thrive at Anfield, specifically citing his athleticism, efficiency on the ball, and defensive combativeness as his standout attributes.

Club Brugge are reportedly open to selling the defender this summer should offers arrive in the region of £40m, which gives Liverpool cause for optimism in their pursuit.

However, the Reds face stiff competition, with Chelsea and Manchester City also set to battle for Ordonez’s signature, according to TEAMtalk.

Liverpool’s broader shortlist also includes Benfica’s Antonio Silva, Sporting’s Ousmane Diomande, Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke, Brentford’s Nathan Collins, Burnley’s Maxime Esteve, and Tottenham Hotspur’s Micky van de Ven.

The urgency to strengthen at centre-back is further amplified by Virgil van Dijk approaching his 35th birthday in July, with growing signs that the Liverpool captain is no longer at his absolute peak.

Recent defensive arrivals Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni are both expected to need time to regain full sharpness after lengthy injury absences, adding further pressure on the club to act decisively.

Ordonez’s blend of physicality and technical quality makes him a strong candidate to become a reliable fixture in Liverpool’s backline for years to come.

Should the deal materialise, the young Ecuadorian would be well positioned to gradually assume greater responsibility as the club navigates its defensive transition.
