Manchester United are stepping up their pursuit of Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, with the club identified as the leading candidate to secure his signature.

According to Fichajes, United have emerged as the ‘top contender’ to sign the France international in a deal expected to cost around £60m this summer.

Michael Carrick’s side are looking to strengthen their midfield, an area of concern, and view Tchouameni as the marquee addition capable of transforming that department.

Tchouameni has been one of the standout midfielders at the ongoing FIFA World Cup, catching the attention of clubs across Europe with his commanding performances for France.

In France’s opener against Senegal, he completed 62 of his 69 passes at a 90% success rate, made 78 touches, won three of four contested ground duels, and made six recoveries and two interceptions.

He returned to action when France faced an Erling Haaland-led Norway side at the Boston Stadium, helping Les Bleus secure a 4-1 victory and progress to the knockout stage.

At club level, Tchouameni has been equally impressive, featuring in all 33 of Real Madrid’s LaLiga games last season despite playing under both Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa, who deployed different systems.

His development since arriving in the Spanish capital four years ago has been remarkable, particularly in his passing, with a 91.5% pass-completion rate and 25 chances created last season highlighting his creative contribution.

Beyond his defensive qualities, Tchouameni offers a fierce long-range strike and outstanding aerial ability, making him a consistent threat from set pieces in attacking situations.

Having already surpassed 300 top-flight appearances and collected multiple major honours by the age of 26, Tchouameni brings considerable experience and pedigree to any club that secures his services.

The 13-time Premier League champions are expected to accelerate their efforts to land the midfielder this month, with the report indicating United are serious about concluding a deal quickly.

If completed, the signing would represent a significant statement of intent from United as they look to close the gap on their Premier League rivals under Carrick’s management.
