Arsenal won the Premier League last season and reached the Champions League final, capping a remarkable campaign under manager Mikel Arteta.
Despite those achievements, Arteta is reportedly determined to strengthen his squad further ahead of the upcoming season as he bids to sustain that level of performance.
According to Football Insider, Arsenal are now keen on signing Aston Villa centre back Ezri Konsa this summer as part of their ongoing recruitment drive.
Aston Villa value the 28-year-old at £50 million, though the club are reportedly reluctant to sanction his departure during the current transfer window.
Manager Unai Emery and the Villa leadership are said to be relaxed about Konsa’s situation, with his contract at the club running until 2028.
With no pressing financial need to sell, Villa hold a strong hand in any negotiations and are under no obligation to let their defender leave this year.
Konsa has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable centre backs, offering pace, composure, strong one-on-one defending, and the ability to play out from the back.
Those qualities would make him a strong fit for Arsenal’s style of play, and at 28, he is arguably hitting the peak years of his career and could welcome a fresh challenge.
However, it is difficult to imagine Arsenal committing £50 million to a defender given the depth they already possess in that position across their squad.
Mikel Arteta already has Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba as high-quality central defensive options, while Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapie have also impressed and added further competition at the back.
Spending heavily on a player who may not be guaranteed regular starting football at the Emirates could be seen as a questionable allocation of resources for the club.
Reports suggest that signing a left winger remains Arsenal’s primary transfer objective this summer, with that area of the pitch considered the most pressing need for Arteta.
With the new Premier League season fast approaching, the Gunners may look to resolve that winger search first before turning attention to any defensive additions.
