Xabi Alonso officially began his tenure as Chelsea manager this week, with just five weeks remaining before the Premier League season gets underway.
The new Chelsea boss is expected to revamp his squad significantly, and a midfield addition appears to be high on the agenda heading into the summer window.
Spanish outlet Cadena SER has reported that Chelsea have belatedly entered the race to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Morten Hjulmand from Atletico Madrid’s grasp.
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the La Liga club has already agreed a deal to sign Hjulmand in a transfer worth £35 million.
Despite that reported agreement, Cadena SER claims Chelsea are prepared to offer Hjulmand a superior contract to tempt him away from a move to the Spanish capital.
Hjulmand has been one of Sporting Lisbon’s standout performers in recent months, attracting serious attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
The 27-year-old Danish international is known for his high work-rate off the ball, pressing opponents effectively and cutting off passing lanes across the midfield.
His physicality makes him a dominant presence in 50-50 duels, while he also contributes with interceptions and his ability to win possession back for his side.
Going forward, Hjulmand excels at progressive passing and making late runs into the final third, qualities that would make him a valuable asset at Stamford Bridge.
With doubts lingering over Enzo Fernandez’s future at Chelsea, adding a midfielder of Hjulmand’s quality would represent a significant statement of intent from Alonso.
A critical factor in any potential deal could be Hjulmand’s £70 million release clause, which Chelsea would need to trigger if they want to outmanoeuvre Atletico’s existing agreement.
However, a significant obstacle remains for Chelsea, as Atletico Madrid would offer Hjulmand the opportunity to play Champions League football next season, something Chelsea cannot currently provide.
