Manchester United have joined Newcastle United in registering an interest in signing Nottingham Forest defender Neco Williams, according to BBC Sport.
The Red Devils have made strengthening their squad a priority this summer, with a focus on adding quality depth across multiple positions ahead of their Champions League return.
United have already secured an agreement to sign Andrey Santos from Chelsea, with a formal announcement expected imminently as the club builds momentum in the transfer window.
Williams, 25, has emerged as a target for multiple Premier League clubs, with Forest currently working to offer the Welsh international an improved contract to ward off interest.
The full-back’s current deal still has three years remaining, but the growing external attention could complicate Forest’s efforts to keep him tied to the club long-term.
United do have existing options at right-back, with both Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui currently on their books providing reasonable depth in that position.
Mazraoui impressed during the World Cup with Morocco, operating exclusively at left-back, and the 28-year-old is expected to take on a bigger role as United navigate a heavier fixture schedule this season.
Manager Michael Carrick may still want a specialist left-back option, particularly given Patrick Dorgu is viewed primarily as a winger following his impressive performances this year.
Williams offers versatility, having played both full-back roles, though he has featured predominantly on the left side during his time at Nottingham Forest.
The Welshman was a reliable presence last season, winning an impressive 6 duels and 2.6 tackles per game, while also contributing 5 goal involvements in the Premier League despite Forest’s difficult campaign.
Williams made the move from Liverpool to the Tricky Trees for just £12 million four years ago, and has since racked up over 150 appearances for the club, growing considerably as a player.
Forest are reportedly reluctant to sell, and should they entertain offers, any deal would likely require a fee in the region of £30 million to secure his departure from the City Ground.
Questions remain over whether United’s interest is genuine or agent-driven, but Williams would at minimum provide capable cover for Luke Shaw at left-back as Carrick plans for the season ahead.
