Manchester United are stepping up their efforts to sign Club Brugge left-back Joaquin Seys this summer, according to reports from the Mirror.
The Red Devils have identified strengthening their defensive options as a priority heading into the new campaign under manager Michael Carrick.
United initially targeted Newcastle United youngster Lewis Hall as their first-choice option to bolster the left-back position this transfer window.
However, the club has been unable to persuade Newcastle to sanction a sale, forcing them to turn their attention toward alternative targets on the continent.
Seys, 21, enjoyed an exceptional 2025-26 season with Club Brugge, featuring in all 51 of the Belgian club’s matches across all competitions.
The young fullback contributed five goals and eight assists throughout that impressive campaign, alerting several top European clubs to his considerable talents.
Seys began his footballing journey at Oostende before joining Brugge’s academy in 2012, steadily climbing through the youth ranks to establish himself as a key first-team player.
He made his senior debut in the Belgian Super Cup on July 20, 2024, featuring in a 2-1 defeat to Union Saint-Gilloise before marking his Jupiler Pro League bow with a goal in a 1-1 draw against KV Mechelen.
His performances in the Champions League last season helped earn him a place in the Belgium national squad, and he featured in their World Cup quarter-final exit at the hands of eventual champions Spain.
Club Brugge are understood to have placed a value of around £30m on Seys, with his contract at the club running until the summer of 2029.
United are not willing to meet that asking price in full and are instead hoping to negotiate a reduced fee for the Belgian international.
Sources suggest that Seys “ticks a lot of boxes” for Carrick and his staff, largely due to the player’s significant potential for future development.
The plan would see him initially serve as understudy to Luke Shaw before eventually making the left-back role his own over the coming years.
Seys offers further versatility as he can also operate at right-back or as a holding midfielder if tactical circumstances require it.
