Tottenham Hotspur are preparing to follow up their blockbuster £100m signing of Sandro Tonali with another major move this summer transfer window.
The north London club have already signalled their intent to Liverpool that they are “coming with a bid” for winger Cody Gakpo, according to Dutch journalist Joost Blaauwhof.
Speaking to Redmen TV, Blaauwhof outlined that Spurs have made their position clear to Liverpool, with a formal offer expected once certain conditions are met on Merseyside.
“Spurs already [told] Liverpool they are coming with a bid when Barcola is coming in or another striker is coming in,” Blaauwhof told Redmen TV.
The journalist also offered encouragement to Tottenham supporters, suggesting that Gakpo himself is open to the move and that a deal could progress rapidly once Liverpool secure their own targets.
“[Gakpo]’s open for the move. But, Liverpool is one of the biggest clubs in the world, so he’s not desperate to leave. But when [Spurs] come over and they make him a star player… I think it could be a very quick transfer.”
The potential deal for Gakpo is reportedly tied into Liverpool’s pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola, meaning the timeline for any agreement may hinge on Anfield business first.
Gakpo, who is 27 years old, scored three goals at the World Cup this summer, taking his overall international record to 24 goals in 54 games for the Netherlands.
The Dutchman has accumulated 50 goals in just over 180 appearances for Liverpool, including a standout 2024/25 campaign under Arne Slot where he scored ten and assisted four as the Reds claimed the title.
His output dipped to seven league goals last season, but Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi appears keen to restore him to his best form in north London.
The comparison with Tonali is one that carries genuine weight, with the Italian midfielder having endured his own difficult spell at Newcastle United before rediscovering top form.
Tonali missed almost the entirety of 2023/24 due to a gambling ban before bouncing back emphatically in 2024/25, with Paul Scholes famously labelling him the best midfielder in the Premier League and “better than Declan Rice.”
Tonali’s pre-season form under De Zerbi has only strengthened the belief that the £100m outlay was a sound investment, with the midfielder impressing against both Getafe and Hoffenheim.
Against Getafe, the 26-year-old completed 100% of his dribbles, 100% of his tackles and won four of his five ground duels, losing the ball just five times from 62 touches.
In the 3-0 win over Hoffenheim, Tonali played the full 90 minutes and recorded a stellar 96% pass accuracy while again losing possession on just five occasions from 67 touches.
He also netted in the 2-1 pre-season victory over Chelsea, rifling in from range to underline his early impact in Tottenham colours despite Kevin Danso receiving a red card in that match.
Gakpo similarly demonstrated his quality during a key campaign at PSV Eindhoven, scoring and assisting 21 goals in just his final 14 Eredivisie starts before moving to Liverpool.
At a reported asking price of £70m or more, Gakpo would represent a significant but targeted outlay for Spurs as they continue to reshape their squad under De Zerbi’s direction.
With Brentford the first league test of the new season, Tottenham supporters will hope the transfer momentum generated by the Tonali deal continues with the addition of a player capable of immediately elevating the team.
