Chelsea have reignited their interest in Arsenal attacking midfielder Ethan Nwaneri, with a move this summer considered a possibility, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

The 19-year-old has spent the second half of the season on loan at Marseille, seeking the regular game time he has been unable to secure at Arsenal.

Arsenal are reportedly aware of Nwaneri’s desire to leave the Emirates Stadium permanently and could be open to a sale as they consider their own squad overhaul.

Transfermarkt values the young midfielder at £30 million, though Arsenal may have reservations about strengthening a direct Premier League rival in Chelsea.

Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League in 2025/26 and will not be competing in European football next season, making squad reconstruction a pressing priority this summer.

The club is expected to revamp several positions, with the number 10 role identified as a key area following uncertainty around Enzo Fernandez’s future at Stamford Bridge.

Cole Palmer currently operates without a natural backup in that position, which has increased Chelsea’s interest in a player of Nwaneri’s technical profile.

However, with Palmer and Estevao Willian already occupying the attacking positions Nwaneri would target, there are genuine questions about how much playing time he would actually receive.

Since Clearlake Capital took over Chelsea, the club has consistently pursued high-quality young talent, and Nwaneri fits that profile comfortably as a highly regarded English prospect.

The absence of European football means Chelsea will play fewer matches next season, reducing the likelihood that Nwaneri would earn a prominent role at the club.

Given his primary motivation is consistent minutes, a move to a mid-table side rather than a top club could ultimately prove a more sensible career decision for the teenager.

Chelsea’s pursuit of Nwaneri remains at an exploratory stage, and while interest has been confirmed, the overall likelihood of the transfer completing this summer remains uncertain.
