Tottenham Hotspur are poised to submit a formal £60m offer to West Ham United for midfielder Matheus Fernandes, according to journalist Nicolo Schira.

The 21-year-old has emerged as one of the most coveted players in this summer’s transfer window following a standout season in east London.

Fernandes originally arrived in England from Sporting as a relatively unknown talent before quickly establishing himself at Southampton in the Premier League.

Following Southampton’s relegation, he secured a move to West Ham, but history repeated itself as the Hammers also dropped out of the top flight last season.

Despite the club’s struggles, Fernandes thrived individually, making 42 appearances across all competitions and contributing five goals and five assists.

His work without the ball arguably defined his campaign, with his tally of 193 ball recoveries the highest of any West Ham player throughout the season.

Fernandes also registered 112 tackles over the course of the campaign, more than twice the total recorded by any of his teammates at the club.

His 73 successful tackles was likewise the highest in the squad by a considerable margin, with Kyle Walker-Peters ranking second on 38.

Matteo Moretto has reported that Spurs are “very close” to agreeing personal terms with Fernandes, adding momentum to what has become an accelerating pursuit by the north London club.

Tottenham will face stiff competition for the Portugal international’s signature, with Manchester United and Real Madrid also identified as clubs in the race to sign him.

Fernandes’ duel success rate of 55.73% comfortably surpassed Jarrod Bowen’s 43.07%, despite Bowen attempting considerably more one-on-one duels across the season with 476 compared to Fernandes’ 384.

His combative qualities and efficiency in possession make him a natural fit for the system deployed by Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi.

Spurs will hope their £60m bid is enough to fend off interest from United and Real Madrid and secure one of this summer’s most sought-after midfielders.
