Manchester United have made contact with the representative of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha, according to Sky Sports Germany.
The club’s head of scouting Christopher Vivell has already spoken with the German international’s agent as United intensify their pursuit of a second major midfield signing this summer.
United have already secured Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with the Brazilian set to undergo his medical and remaining formalities following his World Cup campaign with Brazil.
Despite landing Ederson, the Red Devils are pushing to add further quality in the centre of the park before the transfer window closes.
Sky Sports Germany report that United are ‘intensifying their efforts’ to land Nmecha, with Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Manchester City all credited with interest in the 25-year-old.
Nmecha has been one of Germany’s standout performers at the World Cup, completing 91% of his passes while averaging four tackles and six duels won per game, along with close to three recoveries per match.
The former Manchester City academy product has also registered two goal contributions in the tournament and has a key role to play for Germany in the knockout stages.
He joined Borussia Dortmund from Wolfsburg in the summer of 2023 and enjoyed his best season yet with the Bundesliga club last term, cementing his reputation as one of Europe’s most coveted midfielders.
The major obstacle for United is that Dortmund are known as tough negotiators, and Kicker report that the German club will not accept less than £86m for Nmecha’s sale this summer.
Nmecha’s contract does contain a release clause, but it is valued at £69m and does not activate until the summer of 2027, dropping further to £60m in 2028, meaning Dortmund hold all the leverage in the current window.
United have reportedly been reluctant to spend a similar sum on West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, who carries a reported price tag of around £85m, making the Nmecha situation equally complex.
Vivell may have opened dialogue with Nmecha’s camp, but reaching an agreement with Dortmund on a reduced fee looks set to be a significant challenge for the Old Trafford hierarchy.
