Chelsea have opened talks with Rayo Vallecano to sign left-back Pep Chavarría, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The move comes after Marc Cucurella’s departure to Real Madrid left Chelsea short of options at left-back heading into the new season.
With Jorrel Hato currently the only recognised left-back at the club, new manager Xabi Alonso is prioritising reinforcements in that position this summer.
Romano confirmed the initial approach on X, stating that talks between the clubs have already begun with the player himself open to making the switch.
Romano wrote: “Chelsea are in club to club talks with Rayo Vallecano for Pep Chavarría as new left back. Initial contact made with player keen on the move.”
Chavarría, valued at around £9m by Transfermarkt, is contracted to Rayo Vallecano until 2030, meaning a formal agreement between the clubs will be required.
The Spaniard has established himself as a reliable and experienced performer at Estadio de Vallecas over recent seasons in La Liga.
Chavarría was a key figure as Rayo Vallecano reached the Conference League final last term, though they ultimately fell to Crystal Palace in that match.
Across 44 appearances in all competitions, the defender made four goal contributions and kept 12 clean sheets, highlighting his importance to the side.
The 28-year-old represents a shift in Chelsea’s transfer thinking under owner Todd Boehly, who has previously focused on signing younger talent rather than experienced players.
Chelsea’s pursuit of Chavarría follows their reported interest in veteran midfielder Granit Xhaka from Sunderland, suggesting a broader tactical shift under Alonso.
Separately, Chelsea are also reported to be close to signing right-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta, as the club looks to strengthen across the defensive line this window.
