Chelsea have reached an agreement to sign Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix in a £52m permanent transfer, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The deal brings one of the Premier League’s most statistically dominant defenders to Stamford Bridge ahead of the new season under manager Xabi Alonso.
Chelsea’s defensive troubles have been well documented since the BlueCo takeover, with the backline consistently identified as an area requiring urgent investment and improvement.
Under Mauricio Pochettino in the 2023-24 season, Chelsea conceded 74 goals in all competitions and 63 in 38 Premier League matches, the most the club have ever conceded in a 38-game league season.
Last season offered little improvement, as Chelsea conceded 52 Premier League goals despite high hopes following their Club World Cup win earlier in the campaign.
The Blues have already moved to address their defensive issues this summer, having signed Italian fullback Marco Palestra from Atalanta ahead of the new campaign.
Romano reports that Crystal Palace have accepted Chelsea’s £52m fee after several rounds of negotiations that began during the World Cup campaign this summer.
Lacroix, who stands at 6ft 4in, is now set to undergo his medical before signing a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge that runs until 2032.
The 26-year-old France international joined Crystal Palace from VfL Wolfsburg in 2024 and has quickly established himself among the most dependable defenders in the English top flight.
His pace, strength and ability in one-on-one situations make him well suited to a high defensive line or deeper defensive structure, giving Alonso significant tactical flexibility.
According to stats from Opta, Lacroix was the only centre-back in the Premier League to win 50-plus tackles (60), 200-plus duels (204) and record 250-plus clearances (252) last season.
That remarkable combination of defensive output and physical presence has cemented his reputation as one of the most well-rounded centre-backs currently operating in the Premier League.
His recovery pace has been particularly noted, with the Frenchman ranking among the quickest centre-backs in the division since his arrival from Wolfsburg.
Alonso will now have a centre-back capable of playing effectively in both a back three and a back four, giving his squad considerably more defensive depth and quality heading into the new campaign.
