Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly plotting a move to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, according to Football Insider.
The 33-year-old Argentine has been a consistent starter at Villa Park since his arrival from Arsenal, establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s elite shot-stoppers.
Martinez played a key role in helping Aston Villa win the Europa League last campaign, further cementing his reputation as a world-class goalkeeper.
In 32 Premier League appearances last season, Martinez registered a solitary assist, kept seven clean sheets, and posted an impressive 71% save rate.
On the international stage, Martinez has won a World Cup and two Copa America titles with Argentina, underlining his pedigree at the very highest level of the game.
Aston Villa are now reported to be open to selling Martinez before the September 1st transfer deadline, following their recent signing of Zion Suzuki from Parma.
Tottenham’s pursuit of Martinez comes after they allowed Guglielmo Vicario to leave for Juventus, creating a significant void in their goalkeeping department.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side have already brought in Martin Dubravka and also have Antonin Kinsky available, but reports indicate Spurs want a more established No.1.
Martinez is a 6ft 5in right-footed goalkeeper who is comfortable playing out from the back, strong in the air, capable in the sweeper-keeper role, and an excellent shot-stopper.
His existing contract at Villa Park runs until 2029, meaning Aston Villa hold significant leverage in any potential transfer negotiations with Tottenham.
Tottenham have been extremely active throughout this transfer window after enduring a difficult campaign last term under De Zerbi.
The club has already strengthened considerably in midfield, bringing in Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali to add quality and depth to that area of the pitch.
Defensively, Spurs have also made significant investments, securing the signatures of Andrew Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Jan Paul van Hecke to shore up a previously leaky backline.
Reports suggest Tottenham are also seeking new attacking reinforcements before the transfer window closes at the end of August.
Whether the North London club will follow through with a concrete approach for Martinez remains to be seen, but the need for a top-level goalkeeper appears clear.
