Armchair Guide To Civil Disorder

Good morning,

Yesterday was a mixed bag then. The atmosphere inside The Lane was a marketing man’s dream. Smiling families, Mexican waves, fans cheering players and singing songs, and Spurs a’ winning. That’s what I like.

Sometime after the atmosphere outside The Lane resembled a bad night night in Belfast. So what happened? What happened to the vehicles that were torched, shops that were looted, the windows that were smashed, the houses destroyed is pretty well documented. I’ve included a short gallery from images I picked up from Twitter.

But what happened to precipitate this? There are actually three paths that took us to this civil disorder. The most obvious, at first glance appears to be some upside down gangster revenge for a policeman shooting dead one Mark Duggan. Duggan –  street name ‘Starrish Mark’ –  was supposedly a gangsta member of Tottenham Man Dem Gang, a street mob believed to be involved with the infamous Jamaica Yardies.

Apparently Starrish Mark was under observation by the fuzz as it was believed he was all set to take revenge for the killing of his cousin Kevin Easton a rapper – street name ‘Smegz’ – who was fatally stabbed outside a Mile End nightclub back in March.

Anyway, legend has it that Starrish Mark was in a taxi when he spotted an armed officer and it alleged took a pot shot at him from the back of the cab. The officer’s life was saved by his radio which took the bullet. The officer then returned fire and Duggan and was shot dead.

A march of people from Broadwater Farm to a local police station then took place last night in protest over Starrish Mark’s death. The march resulted in numerous acts of arson, criminal damage and looting.

The social back drop to this simply reveals how politicians using the phrase ‘Broken Britain’ is a joke. Not a very funny one. It was them that broke it.

You don’t need any  GCSE’s in Neurology to work out that society needs looking after or it goes wrong. Haringey’s youth clubs were shut after the Youth Services budget was slashed by 75% after a cut of £41m to the council’s overall budget.

Now I’m not going to try and kid you that because there’s nowhere for teenagers to play ping pong Curry’s got robbed. But it’s all part of the bigger picture whereby people who are vulnerable are effectively abandoned by society.

Environments where these gang cultures are allowed to blossom need to be attacked. You break the cycle with education and tackling the abysmal places these disaffected people were sent to live.

I have no political affiliations. I think that they’re all bent. But the if you want to point a finger, point it at the last Labour government. In power for years and all they did was become as fat and corrupt as their so called old enemies the Tories. What was their legacy for the going nowhere people of Broadwater Farm? Policies so inept that the weak and the futureless are the first to get bitten as the inevitable cuts are implemented.

That said, whatever insane agenda of revenge the mob had, their social and economic plight doesn’t excuse trying to disguise a looting and vandalism trip as a protest. It’s highly unlikely there will be many arrests, but let’s hope there are. This lot aren’t freedom fighters they’re criminals.

When people are burning cars on their own streets the problem is bigger than looking for a youth in a hoody carrying matches.

  • Spurs to move away from N17 please says:

Its not the “environment” that needs looking at, its the filth we have allowed to move in and take over the area! Most of these jigaboos were only out on the rampage last night so they could get themselves a new flatscreen tv, because they sure as phuk wont get off of their drug addled ar5eholes to earn the money honestly!!! Multiculturalism is breaking down in Europe daily, and is already being criticised as a “failed experiment” forced upon the people of the UK by a left wing tribe of liberalist lunatics trying to manipulate their way into ensuring they were constantly voted into power by virtue of the immigrant vote! You can take the boy out of the jungle, but you cant take the jungle out of the boy! This sort of behaviour in a “civilised” society just goes to show how real the differences are between certain people.

    • Astromesmo says:

You really didn’t just use the word j***** did you? The 1970’s are gone my friend.

    • Lodvic says:

Wow, “Multiculturalism is breaking down in Europe daily, and is already being criticised as a “failed experiment”” you just Quoted a German minister who was addressing a right wing youth camp when the statement was made…. Hitler youth anybody?

    • LLL says:

For fucks sake, I don’t encounter this kind of despicable racist bullshit anywhere else in my life, it’s very depressing that I have to encounter it on a football forum.

    • frontwheel 2 says:

Look at the history of London you moron,it has and always will be one big melting pot

    • emspurs says:

fuckwit. I’m ashamed we support the same club.

    • LosLorenzo says:

See my above comments to white knight… You, my friend, are the “failed experiment”. I’m all for maximizing freedoms, but thinking about what a piss poor job your parets did of raising you I can’t help but wondering if 1984-style birthing licences might not be such a bad idea…

  • Astromesmo says:

Nicely put HH. There are reasons that there are no riots in Fulham and Knigtsbridge. Tottenham has been shat upon collectively for decades – and if our own experiences with the corruption and backward policies of local and national government with our attempts to get the NDP up and running are anything to go by – I would have been surprised if Levy himself wasn’t out in the street with a Milk Bottle.

This isn’t just about a guy getting shot. That was just the trigger. The area needs investment, it needs jobs and it’s people need to be treated like human beings rather than some kind of disposable flotsam that are all ‘Wrong ‘uns Sarge’.

Dimbleby is making a lot of noises this morning about their warm cuddly policing in the area, but anyone who has lived in a place like Tottenham has seen what that means in reality. A few nicely scripted PR stunts and smiling coppers dancing with old Jamaican ladies at carnival time, contrasted with guys with social disorders dressed in all black & body armour whizzing up and down the High Rd in silver BMW’s at 100mph pointing guns at people.

Yes, round up the bad guys but don’t treat everyone that fits the social demographic as a potential suspect – To do so criminalises a whole community. We see this daily in Dalston, where there is ONLY ever one type of kid that gets stopped and searched, and it aint the white kids.

Boris & Co. had their chance to get behind a major regeneration of Tottenham and they failed. Let’s hope that if they’re given a second chance they might finally do the right thing by the area.

When you see a group of 10 black kids chase and stab a lone kid to death like a pack of animals or hear how these same gangs gang rape 13 year old girls then throw acid on her to try and burn off the evidence. Then you hear of the atrocities in Africa with mass murder and rape and the evil gangs of south america and jamaica you start to think this is not a funding problem, this is a race problem. By know means do I dislike people by the colour of their skin, and hope I’m not as ignorant or thick as people who support the EDL and BNP, but I am a realist, and wherever there is black communtities there is crime and hatred, no matter how much money is thrown at that, it will never change.

      • AndJolKnowUsByTheTrailOfDead says:

‘you start to think this is not a funding problem’ – Even though you’re talking about the situations where poverty is obviously an overwhelming factor!?

If you’re talking about The DR of Congo- that’s a nation that was terrorised for centuries by the belgians. A conflict that is fuelled by chinese smelding giants and electronic conglomerates like Apple, because it’s on of the only terrains that harbours the minerals used to create the microchips in your fucking Iphone. ( Tungesten, Coltan etc )

Where do you seriously draw the line between yourself and BNP? I think people like you are far more dangerous.

        • LLL says:

Not you. Him, you know, the moron.

        • sadbuttrue says:

How am I dangerous? I dont wish any harm to any race or religion. I dont think we ‘should kick em all out’. This is the world we live in, we share the world with people from different races, class’s and backgrounds. I am pointing out the blindly obvious, to me anyway.

      • LLL says:

You’re a fucking moron, end of debate. No debate worth having with someone so obviously ill-equipped to enter one.

      • Astromesmo says:

Sad, I think you’ll find that rape comes in any colours and it’s evil whichever way you look at it. Please don’t fall into the Daily Mail trap of thinking every crime is committed by non-whites. I think you’ll find that Fred West, Peter Sutcliffe et al where white. That’s not the issue.

The issue is that successive governments have failed the area of Tottenham. That despite the best efforts of the local community at rebuilding itself constantly it is constantly frustrated at every turn by funding issues and poverty.

People later on here talk about ‘lazy Afro-Caribbean’s’ and all sorts of other soundbyte guff but there is a proven and distinct disadvantage to coming from a borough like Harringey when you try to pull yourself up the ladder… No matter what colour you are. Someone trying to get into Oxford has a much greater chance if they are from Chelsea or Eton than someone from Broadwater Farm, fact.

In the face of this, do you keep trying, in spite of all the peer and gang pressure, or do give in and try to do the best you can in a world your never going to escape from. This is an issue of opportunity, not race. Try opening your eyes next time you go to the ground, rather than spinning through it in a taxi.

        • LLL says:

Well done for trying to put an intelligent argument across, I very much doubt it will be understood by those you are arguing with, but I commend your patience!

    • Essexian76 says:

Sorry mate, but you’re so very wrong on that account. As a native of Dalston-Stoke Newington, schooled in Clapton and raised in the area, I can tell you from first-hand experience that the police in my youth were as likely to stop a black kid as a white one. I have been ‘stopped searched’ on countless occasions, but because I’m white, there’s no political point to any protest, and like countless others like me,I just accepted that the police were policing. Also having nothing to hide I didn’t concern myself too much about it either!

    • frontwheel 2 says:

      Nail on the head Astro

    • LosLorenzo says:

Well said Astro. As for those who just can’t wrap their brain around any reason that is not race related, I think I’ve stated my point clearly.

A closing thought, however. Why is it that you never see wealthy black people taking part in riots, shootings and robberies?

  • Death says:

Well said HH, as a life long socialist, the waste and misdirection of resources under the last Labour Government, has left a very unpleasant taste. However, while cutting waste is one thing, cutting essential services is another.
Where will it all end and what sort of society will we be looking at in 5 years? I don’t know but I’m far from optimistic.

    • jfdit says:

Look at the our country and the rest of the western world today and there is a general delusion amongst governments. people and businesses that they can continue to fund their lives without having any actual money.

I see it everywhere and it’s needs to be stopped. Labour have virtually bankrupted this country and filled it with half the 3rd world. This social experiment will backfire very badly and if the debt situation isn’t dealt with properly the people from the 3rd world will soon be feeling less homesick as we’ll all be living in a country with 3rd world infrastructure

  • jfdit says:

Levy will be absolutely gutted, ticket office smashed up and looted, loads of tottenham high road looking like a war zone and a 400 million development scheme now looking impossible to carry through – the wankers didn’t even have the decency to torch the listed buildings costing so much to retain

Jokes aside no bank is going to lend money to develop that area now without a serious amount of ethnic cleansing, I’ve a mate of mine who works in that area as a firearms officer – he reckons the local gang members are better armed than them and shoot each other for fun on a weekly basis.

    time to move out sadly

    • LLL says:

      “Ethnic Cleansing”

Wow. Last time I use this blog I think, didn’t think I was sharing webspace with so many knuckle-draggers.

      • jfdit says:

sorry wrong term, but can you see us building a new shiny stadium & 250 million pounds worth of flats with that shit going on?

      • Harry Hotspur says:

Hold up there, cowboy. The bulk of this site’s readers as with the bulk of intelligent people are anti racist. You’re welcome to vent but keep your remarks aimed at specific comments.

It’s easy to throw your hands up in the air and shout, “you’re all racists!” but it’s evidently not the case.

I could delete the comments that don’t fit in with my own. But I’m not censoring stuff like this. There is room for debate here without hurling obscenities or branding everyone as a wrong ‘un.

        • jfdit says:

apologies H, I was thinking of the completely ridiculous situation where levy will be sitting down with banks trying to arrange financing for the NDP whilst some of the locals of many races do their very best to ensure their neighbourhood is never improved.

gentrification is probably a more suitable term

        • LLL says:

Well, my post was specifically aimed at that comment. And the more general point was that there seemed to be a lot of racist content filling this page – more than I am comfortable cohabiting with – this is a Spurs board not a EDL / BNP / Neo-Nazi one as far as I was aware.

And I’m not really sorry for blurting obscenities either, anyone more offended by the word ‘fuck’ than they are by some of the views expressed here and terms such as ‘jigaboo’ needs their head looking at.

        • LLL says:

Not trying to wind you up, but I find it a tad ‘rum’ that your only intervention on this thread as blog master (or whatever it’s called) is to chastise me for using blue language. I can only imagine I’d have other concerns if this was my blog.

due to the “kids go free” family deal yesterday a group of us took 6 kids for their first trip to see the mighty spurs, they had a great day and loved the atmosphere(mexican wave!)i get home to find the same street id left 3hrs before on fire, the animals responsable for the “burnin and lootin” need putting down, and as above im sure if we had our shinny new stadia the cnuts would have focased the limited attention on it. as for the game,451 against a team that have 451 as a religion was embarassing in the first half, benny was no doubt motm and the change to 442 lead my 6yr old son to smugly prenounce”see i told you crouchy is good”
