Finishing Top Ain’t A Must

Good afternoon.

Now the Stoke game is confirmed as on we can and indeed ought make a welcome  return to focusing on football.

I remember when I first discovered Woody Allen. A few live recordings of his stand up and then ‘Without Feathers’. Anyway there was a sketch about a ransom demand and his father’s very poor reading habits.

Today …I discovered a London Evening Standard interview with Henry James Redknapp, footballing supremo of this parish published some 3 days ago. ”Harry Hotspur for the best reheated leftovers this side of Stone Henge.’

“Finishing top four is not a must [to keep those players],” said Redknapp. “If Arsenal don’t get in the top four, are their best players going to leave? If Chelsea don’t, will their best players walk away?

Is this clown out of his tiny cockle & whelk slurping mind?  I’m no expert in these matters but is he actually for real? Modric is a man overboard just waiting to happen. Bale who we all love is only human a footballer after all and if the right offer came in from someone else – in addition to Arry – who didn’t give a monkey’s about his dreadful license to roam vision, who’s to say that not being a Champions League side wouldn’t have a baring?

I find it staggering that our manager, in fact any decent Premiership manager would come out with such self serving twaddle. Ian Holloway, yes. But to the best of my knowledge Ian Holloway and Henry James Redknapp are two separate people.

I’d be fascinated to get Levy & Co’s view on this. The impact of Champions League football  on THFC’s revenue streams, the revenue streams that are pivotal to the new stadium don’t need spelling out.

Is this unfair criticism? Is he right? Is securing a top four finish a mere trifle? Is it a supermarket own brand trifle, all bovine gelatine, artificial flavourings and a some genetically modified custard substitute? Maybe he’s right.  Maybe upon considered reflection the notion that Champions League football is nothing to get too fussed about is a fair viewpoint.

He’s certainly implying that you won’t necessarily lose your players if you DON’T make the top4 and he has a small point. He also referred to our number of previous top4 finishes… Players who come here generally aren’t expecting to win two or three Premier Leagues over their 4yr contract. Our mentions as part of the top4 or 5 in the country have mainly been fleeting and for 10/15yrs totally absent. We cannot yet budget to constant CL participation because we’ve no consistency. The new ground will bridge alot of that but for now we’re certainly punching above our weight should we finish 3rd or 4th. Harry’s the bigger reason moreso than Tottenham that Modrich is ‘getting on with it’. And if he weren’t, you know Bale would be right behind. Redknapp’s keeping it all together. Beyond Mourinio, it’s difficult to see how we can sustain, nevermind improve, on where we are. COYS
    I feel a win coming.

    • Harry Hotspur says:

That is a fantastically generous appraisal. Fair play to you.

    • ceegee says:

dear oh dear jerkin its supporters like u that make me weep for our club maybe its the fact we’ve been punchin BELOW our weight for 15 to 20 yrs has given u such low expectations for our club!

      • Essexian76 says:

How on this earth did you arrive at that?, For the past 20 years we’ve had to play catch up after near insolvency in 1991. Everything that’s happened in the PL since has worked against us both financially and in football terms. Each team we’ve tried to build upon has been poached or had players heads turned by the allure of CL football and higher wages, yet you somehow disregard the facts because they don’t suit your perspective-reality check required! it not a question of low expectations, it’s more a case of having to compete in an unfair Premiership with us being hamstrung with a small stadia and tight financial restrictions!

    • Spurstacus says:

Your jerkinmahgerkin surely? We have many members of our squad that have won titles and cups even a world cup winner. They come to the club expecting to contribute to a winning team and leave when it becomes apparent that its not a winning team. Just look at the exodus of Arsenals best players.

“generally aren’t expecting to win two or three Premier Leagues over their 4yr contract”

Some of them have come to be the star in a decent side that play attractive football so they can secure a mega-bucks move to a European giant, as it turns out.

      Just ask Berbatov. Or Ratboy.

  • Spurlative says:

Hopefully we can take some positives from the event that has dominated the football headlines the last few days and the players are far more grounded and will play like every pass, run or shot at goal actually means something.
Hopefully we can just play like winners again.

Its no coincidence that the team have been shite post tax trial.I’m sick of HR being cryptic about the England job, he should nail his colours to the mast and let everyone know what his plans entail. Once the team knows his decision they can play decisive, at the moment they are in limbo as to what the future holds.
If he wants to leave, just go, then we can all get on with disagreeing about who the new manager should be. If not Jose then Brendan Rogers for me (F**K the big names) and I’m sticking to it.

    • Essexian76 says:

As implied before Jim, I think it’s more a case of Levy asking Harry to be coy as if we’re led to believe the jobs as good as his, the more doubt, the higher the compensation will be? If Harry say’s outright he wants it-obviously then the FA will pay far less, because there’s little or no doubt about the outcome.

      • minionas says:

Yes that is probably the reason. Levy would never let a crap load of compensation go out the window being the business man he is but I really do believe its having a bad effect on the team. Honestly essex you know how I feel/felt about HR and the thing has got to me so much I’ve started thinking the mans a cnut.

        • Essexian76 says:

Jim lad I’ve always thought he was anyway, and going back to the summer I felt his comments to the media were always spouted out and thoughtless, rather than measured and considerate, but the simple fact still remains is we’re in 3rd spot and a cup quarter final, which is a damned sight better position than many on here thought we’d be back in August ;-)

        • minionas says:

A load on here said that, but I didn’t see it. I thought he was a decent bloke who took the right approach to management. It lets you down when his true colours are shown. I suppose we should all be more upbeat but I’m getting that “impending doom feeling” more and more.

          Essexian,

Next time you want to sneak on here after you’ve ran out of glue to sniff to call me a prick in the dead of night, use proper English.

I still think your a prick, but there you go-God bless eh?”

          You’re a prick.

        • minionas says:

Come on fellas. Enough of that now its all just handbags and aint worth your time. :cop:

        • Essexian76 says:

Yeah I forgot the smiley face-it’s a lame excuse, but do I care? Not a jot!

        • Spurstacus says:

He is right tho isn’t he? There is an apostrophe missing. I regularly get caught out by it.

      • MysteriousStranger says:

You would care if you dared to say it to my face, but I don’t think you would. Continue to act the big man.

I’m getting very, very bored with your repeated and periodical, personal insults.

There was a time when I bit so hard and said some things I regretted. And said as much. Despite pleas from Harry to play the ball and not the man, you continue to play the man.

You may not care as you troll your way around my posts, but I do care, because this place was a far more pleasant one without you around to contaminate it. So do me a favour and don’t bother addressing me with your pathetic behaviour any more.

        • Essexian76 says:

You can meet me anytime you lke-there’s a team playing in the Tottenham area, you know, as I attend on a regular basis, the venue’s no problem. eh?

If anyone still feels like their mood need lifting I have a bag of e’s left over from the last rave I went to. It was new years eve 1992 Labrynth Dalston Lane. I just found them under the insole of my old Reebok classics. They’re lovedoves which were wicked™ at the time but as they haven’t been stored in optimal conditions I couldn’t guaranty the quality of buzz.
I’ll be on the corner of Railton Rd and Cold Harbour Lane, wearing a purple nafnaf puffa jacket and a NY Yankees baseball cap on back to front.
Everything starts with an E!! Oi Oi!!
