At Four O’Clock The Dream Is Over

Good morning.

Football can be a cruel mistress. Arry’s in this morning’s Sun sounding as moribund about the England gig as he has been about the Tottenham one. Talk of players caring more about their club than country. Welcome to the 21st century.

I’m noticing the increasing frequency that Bobby Moore’s name is coming up in Redschnapp’s conversations and can’t help but feel the old goat is feeling rather sorry for himself. The call from the FA never came and instead a Grammar school boy from Walton has stolen his thunder, his legacy.

He’ll be furious that the compensation to Spurs was such a killer issue. But what he won’t want to contemplate is that the FA for all their faults, would have been earnestly looking for reasons not to employ him. It’s the way creaking, reactionary, organisations like that work.

Arry emerged from Court a born again citizen.  An exonerated payer of taxes and everyfink. The Newcastle game saw him ecstatic. Every goal that went in was  a smack in the face to the naysayers and mickey takers. ‘Have some of that. I am a fantastic manager!

But he lacked all self control. Instead of working hard to try and ensure an fitting finale to a fantastic season; he fell into the classic trap of jumping the gun and saw something that might well happen as something that was definitely going to happen.

The most defiant supporters of Arry cling onto to his achievements prior to this fiasco. They’re drunks clinging on to a lamppost.  It’s all about support, not illumination.

And Arry fans needs to get a grip. Not as in acknowledge they’re deluded, but in the manner they approach this whole mess. It’s an online debate. It’s discussion on a blog. On the Internet. Not people shouting abuse through player’s letterboxes at four in the morning.

Very fair criticism has been labelled, ‘vile abuse’ by the pompous who want to police people who don’t share their views. These clowns should be sending people like me flowers and fine wines as a thank you for diffusing the rage from spilling out onto the terraces.  And rage is what we’re talking about.

‘Oh, so called fans like you weren’t about when we had Santini and Francis and gawd knows who else …’ they dredge up. How is the fact it used to be awful in the past remotely relevant to what’s happening in the here and now? Do you, ‘laugh off’ a broken leg because whilst it hurts like hell, it’s not a patch on the heart attack you had a few years ago? I could weep.

Roy’s supposedly been had marathon meetings with the FA yesterday and an announcement is tipped to be made this afternoon. Roy would be potty to take the job. Stark raving mad. His spell at Liverpool saw him flirting with the Mental Health Act and why he now believes he could survive being repeatedly slung down the well of sorrow that is the British press is anyone’s guess.

Blackburn produced 3 points. Those points are banked and nobody can touch ’em. But Blackburn were gormless. We’ll be lucky indeed if our remaining three opponents are as kind.

What I’d like from Arry now are some statements of intent. Chelsea have just bought Marin who is a decent player. Arsenal are now being mentioned on an almost daily basis in the same breath as Vertonghen Spurs fans are easy to win round.

Stop peddling garbage, ‘I woz gunna sign Tevez, honest guv, we’ve been looking at Hazard.’ …I was going to marry a supermodel and I spent a hour yesterday looking for some keys. You are talking garbage. Stop it.

Ship in someone fresh for the back-line and stop talking to the press. Tell them you’re too busy training to stop. Stop dreaming away our season and maybe, just maybe you can get us out this mess that you got us into.

A finely penned satire.. I agree with all that’s been said about Harry, Bale on here in recent weeks. As long as we cheer our hearts our for the lads at the games, I’m all for lively and constructive debate.
This “he plays on the left..” chant however, though both incisive and amusing (and possibly cathartic), is not helping our cause settle their nerves and win games.
I accept neither is playing Bale as in inverted deep lying play making thing in a christmas pudding formation..but during the games we must support the team out of our slumber..

    • LLL says:

The ‘plays on the left’ song is not abuse, it’s not even really a chant, it is a cry for help.

      • Spurstacus says:

To add to your comment I’d suggest that if Bale on the right/ in the middle/ up front etc etc, actually worked no one would have a problem. If he scored one in two, or laid on goals every other game no one would want him on the left. But of course he doesn’t. The ‘plays on the left’ song is in recognition of the facts that Bale is most effective, productive and dangerous from there. Harry should know that 2x 2= 4.

  • nobby nobbs says:

Prannay the are both to blame its not all Harry ..but Redknapp has behaved like a toffe nosed child..looking down at us our club our players our pony attempt for CLfootball. He has sneered at THFC for over 3 months. He is a fool.Dont mistake arrogance for confidence. Today that grouchy bastard will have neither.

  • siberiaspur says:

“..stop talking to the press.” Too right, his big mouth likely cost him the England job too. Why can’t he just say “everything’s great, everyone’s happy, COYS”?

  • Simon says:

There are certain things you write, HH, that I agree with. Yes, Harry does say some things in the press that we wish he didn’t say etc. But I remain a huge fan of his. This is the best team we have had since the mid-80s and like it or not it is relevant to remind ourselves of the fact. What’s more, Pleat’s team wasn’t competing against the Ferguson dynasty nor against Russian and Arab billionaires. I think we too easily overlook the positive influence Harry has had on certain players. What was Bale doing for us before Harry got him playing? He has helped oversee the development of the likes of Kyle Walker. Friedel and Parker were great signings, even if they were unpopular at the time.

Granted, there is at the back of my mind the concern that he has taken us as far as he can. He has always done an excellent job in revitalising struggling teams. But I haven’t seen anybody propose somebody who would realistically help us take the next step.

Can we not give him our full support right now? I’ve read some real nonsense here in the last few days – somebody claiming they would rather we miss out on the CL than have Redknapp in charge for another year. Surely a true Spurs fan could not write that? All the personal attacks on his appearance are demeaning and do our great club and its supporters no credit at all.

    COYS

I think the CL comment (I missed it, but I’m not shocked by it) was probably said by someone who was very angry.

If you’re saying you’ve never said anything to someone you loved when you were very angry …then you are either lying or not telling the truth.

      • LosLorenzo says:

I read the CL comment and face-palming ensued. Still, it’s far from the silliest thing I’ve seen on here. Hell. It’s not even as silly as some of the things I’ve WRITTEN on here.

As you say, it just goes to show that people are passionate. Passionate – and sometimes they drink a bit too :winke:

        • LLL says:

It was me what said that, and though it wasn’t as absolute as has been made out (I actually said I was ‘leaning towards’ that), I stand by it.

With a new manager in place I might actually look forward to the Summer and the new season. With Harry in place? Erm. Not so much. With or without CL.

    • LLL says:

Pfft. Just goes to show how deluded the Harry fans can be. What was Bale doing before Harry got him playing? He was packing his boots to be farmed out to the championship before Benny picked up an injury. The rest is history, and as Harry has obviously led you to believe, his story, just like the one about him taking a hotch potch team of nobodies, from nowhere, to glory.

A lot of the Harry fans say those doubting him have short memories. I can remember a lot. I have to count myself fortunate that my memories haven’t been infested by Harry’s self-aggrandizing gibberish.

      • Simon says:

LLL, your reply is gibberish. All I see is a stream of negativity with nothing constructive within.

        • LLL says:

Your own response, which singularly fails to address any of the issues raised against your piece, is perhaps the most pointlessly negative piece of gibberish I’ve read all day.

What isn’t ‘constructive’ about the truth?

        • Essexian76 says:

So Jol’s best was Harry’s worst then? and again to address the myth of Bale selected because of an injury to Benny-since when was Benny a left winger? was Bale bought as left winger?

        • LLL says:

For gods sake! Bale was an attacking left back at Southampton and came to the club as a player who could play either position on the left wing. After impressing in a few games and scoring a couple of free kicks for us, he was pretty much left in the cold when Harry took over. Being the superstitious chap he is, I think Harry was scared about Bale’s hoodoo of not starting a winning game. He probably thought it was better not to have such bad vibes about the place and there was talk of him being loaned to the championship or even sold to a championship club. Then in that January window, Benny picked up an injury and Redknapp gave Bale his ‘chance’ at left back in the FA Cup 4th round against Peterborough. It was only a couple of months later, after Bale had miraculously been transformed into a good player by Harry’s genius that he started to play on the left of midfield, as his performances warranted a starting place and Benny returned from injury.

Now, how’s that for memory, memory-fans?

        • spurious says:

          LLL,

“What isn’t ‘constructive’ about the truth?”

If you’ve yet to realise that the truth is occasionaly destructive, you are 5 years old or have led a very sheltered and privileged life.

        • Essexian76 says:

You said clearly that Bale was only played because of an injury to Benny, yet I clearly recall Bale’s re-introduction and more permanent selection as a left winger-so who put him there? Secondly, there was never any chance or opportunity (according to HR), that Bale would be sold or loaned out to Nott’s Forest or to anyone else and that was speculation by the press (nothing unusual there), so, in essence if HR say’s something, it’s total garbage-yet, if the Day Mail put something in print-it must be a fact?
What I know as a fact is we’re in 4th spot and despite being involved in CL last season, which stretched our resources to the limit, we still managed a 5th place finish-far better than Jol’s ‘achievements’. This season we’ve played some brilliant football, yet even during that unbeaten run, many on here were still belittling the blokes achievements-which in modern terms are unprecedented.

        • LLL says:

@spurious – what on earth are you blathering about?!?!

        • LLL says:

          @Essexian76

“You said clearly that Bale was only played because of an injury to Benny, yet I clearly recall Bale’s re-introduction and more permanent selection as a left winger-so who put him there?”

As has been established quite clearly, what you ‘recall’ and what actually happened are two quite different things. Bale got his opportunity under Harry at left back as cover for the injured Benny. I don’t know why I’m bothering to repeat this as I’m sure you will just reply that you ‘recall’ it differently…

        • spurious says:

          LLL,
So it’s 5 years old then, cretin.

        • LLL says:

@spurious – calling people cretins when your attempt to enter debate constitutes completely ignoring any points made and instead making weird comments about “the truth” being destructive and personal slurs is a bit, you know, rich.

In light of your comment about truth, however, I can only assume that you are arguing that it is better for us Harry doubters to lap up all the bullshit he speaks and bask in the bright light of ignorance and mis-truth just like you do. The alternative could be ‘destructive’, after all.

Your point at 12.37 in reply to Simon, I replied to the latter sentence. If you think it a weird comment I refer back to my cretin comment.

        • Essexian76 says:

I don’t know why I repeatedly have to ask-‘Who played him there?’ third time-you seem obsessed by not giving the bloke any credit whatsoever for seeing something in him that neither Comolli or Ramos could see despite buying him as a left back! LLL, I’m not Harry lover, and as we’re talking about Bale, I recall being incensed when he played Bale as LB at OT the same season-his defensive capabilities are non-existent, championship level at best, and how anyone could play him as LB during that time was beyond me-I’ll happily strongle him for allowing Corluka to go, without having a plan B-I detest the bloke for cowering to SAF practically every time we play Utd and fawning about how great every player or team we’re playing-but-he’s still the best we’ve had in recent times and has done well in a very short time-Yin and Yan, eh?

        • LLL says:

          @spurious

What in your wildest imagination could be considered destructive about acknowledging the truth that Redknapp played Bale because Ekotto picked up an injury?

      • mattspurs says:

        LLL is pretty spot on

Bale came in at Left back to replace Benny who was due to go to African Nations Cup and then sustained an injury (shoulder I think)
Bale played a number of games at left back, when Benny returned to fitness (away at Fulham) he went to left back and Bale went to left midfield. They failed to gel for a few games if my memory serves me well. The upshot of this was that Modric was then shifted into the middle, having up til then been deployed on the left by Harry. Benny’s injury was a double blessing in that Bale showed his talents on the left while Modric showed his in the middle.

I have it on good authority that Bale was to be shipped out permanently for a fee of £3m to birmingham City before benny’s injury.

as a PS this was the same period where Pav came into the team due to injuries to Crouch and Defoe and scored 10 in 11 – strangely Birmingham also wanted Pav and only didn’t sign him because Levy put the price up at the last minute.

        • LLL says:

Harry would have it that he discovered and invented all of their talent. Yet he signed neither of them and either didn’t play them at all or played them in the wrong position until circumstance forced a reshuffle

    • Jameson says:

Agreed, Harry is likely to be here for one more year & if it’s the case, we need to get behind him. Our wage bill is a fraction of others and as Simon said, put your hands on your shoulders, sorry, I mean we are competing with billionaires who are throwing 50 mil on one player, we’d be lucky to have a 50 mil transfer budget. All i know is i’m not ready to go back to the days of watching the last day of the season getting a bit excited that we could finish in the top half. COYS!

      • Jameson says:

Don’t class myself as a Harry fan per se, but I think the definition of deluded is Spurs fans expecting Champs League football each season. We don’t invest like the others, even the scum have made one signing and sounds like another is on his way. We need Demba Ba & 20 mil + striker & a world class centre back before we can start thinking we are a shoe in for the Champs league spots. My shopping list: Demba Ba, Cavani or Falcao, vertonghen or similar(if he doesn’t choose Arsenal) with Caulker back at the club. Midfield is fine, but would look at Adam Johnson as he would be a good addition. Forget Ade, he’s been good for us but the wages are not warranted.

        • Jameson says:

All in all about 50 million should get this, think of the loyalty card points on that.

        • LLL says:

I don’t expect CL every season at all. In fact, if we get 4th or 3rd even, I’d still like to see the back of him because I can’t really stand him and don’t think he is down for the cause. He reps himself, not Tottenham, who he is more than happy to run down publicly to boost his own status.

        • Essexian76 says:

Demba Ba 20 mil, Cavani-name your own price but 20-5 million, Falcao- buy out clause 85 million-erm…50 million you say?

        • Jameson says:

Demba Ba 20mil? 10 mil pay out clause, ain’t that what Arry saying? Arry wouldn’t lie. 35 for Demba Ba & Cavani. We’d surely get 10 mil for Defoe?? And it was Cavani or Falcao not the two together. 15 million left over for a quality centre back, unlucky for us Redknapp’s definition of a quality centre back is Roger Johnson.

    • Hartley says:

When you say his appearance, do you mean his saggy trout chops or his droopy bollock neck or both?

      • melcyid says:

cmon Harts you may have been percieved as lowering the tone of this blog by resorting to personal attacks ,please call the the scrotum sack by its right name :winke: Thank you in anticipation.

    • Wisey says:

      Spot on Simon,

Some of the so called fans of our club are a joke. This is the best Spurs side I have seen since the 80’s and the most entertaining. Harry has taken us from a shambles of a team to a team challenging for the top four. Let him continue his work and see where it leads us. He know’s we need to add quality. As for the idiots on here that slam him then they obviously know nothing about football and have a pretty empty life to hate someone so much.

      • LLL says:

You’ll have to help me out because I know Harry’s
fans have superior memories, but I see to remember Martin Jol also ‘challenging for the top four’ a little while back when he achieved two back to back 5th place finishes. I also seem to remember him being widely liked and respected by Spurs fans for his achievements and general demeanour. Again, if my memory is not doing me a disservice here, perhaps you could explain why it might be that a man like Jol who presided over a ‘shambles of a team’ is to this day held in quite high regard whilst Redknapp is commonly viewed as a self-serving, arrogant and conceited buffoon?

        • Jameson says:

Yep and couldn’t beat West Ham at home, bottled it & the second 5th place finish, let’s not act like we were battling it out for a champs league spot, we were someway off fourth.

        • LLL says:

          We came 5th last year.

        • LLL says:

We may yet come 5th this year – or 6th. In other words Harry is not doing much better than Jol, who had a far inferior squad and a much better grasp on his own importance, and a more efficient bullshit filter.

      • david says:

I could agree with everything you said up to and including the 5-0 win over Newcastle.
For the past 10 weeks our performances have been poor and the results likewise.
HR is supposed to be a great motivator but their has been no evidence of that since mid February.
As a result, our best league position in 50 years has been thrown away.
As manager, HR has to take responsibility for our relegation form over the last 10 weeks.

      • Discospurs says:

Once again, play the ball, not the man.

Sorry, but if the Harry fans really want to make a case for Redknapp, then stop with the insults and give up the terribly tedious line of ‘call yourself a Spurs fan?’

It’s utter rubbish. As I’ve said several times, you can be a passionate Spurs fan, that doesn’t mean you have to like, agree with or want to see those in charge who are in charge.

So just stop it, and go away and think up some arguments we want to here. As a start, come back when you’ve got some arguments against what HH says up top.

I genuinely want to hear your case, because I don’t want to be saddled with this overwhelming sense that logic demands he is replaced.

        • spurious says:

          Disco,
When you make the same point about the Haters abusive personal remarks regarding Redknapp’s appearance I’ll respect what you say.

Most of the so called ‘Happy Clappers’ accept that he should be less of a human sound bite. All we ask is for a balanced discussion that sees the players sharing some of the blame for poor performance, and Redknapp given some credit for good performance.
It’s supposed to be a team game.

Someone said on TV recently that “Newcastle have had 20 managers in 10 years, I wonder why they haven’t won the League”.
