At Four O’Clock The Dream Is Over

Good morning.

Football can be a cruel mistress. Arry’s in this morning’s Sun sounding as moribund about the England gig as he has been about the Tottenham one. Talk of players caring more about their club than country. Welcome to the 21st century.

I’m noticing the increasing frequency that Bobby Moore’s name is coming up in Redschnapp’s conversations and can’t help but feel the old goat is feeling rather sorry for himself. The call from the FA never came and instead a Grammar school boy from Walton has stolen his thunder, his legacy.

He’ll be furious that the compensation to Spurs was such a killer issue. But what he won’t want to contemplate is that the FA for all their faults, would have been earnestly looking for reasons not to employ him. It’s the way creaking, reactionary, organisations like that work.

Arry emerged from Court a born again citizen.  An exonerated payer of taxes and everyfink. The Newcastle game saw him ecstatic. Every goal that went in was  a smack in the face to the naysayers and mickey takers. ‘Have some of that. I am a fantastic manager!

But he lacked all self control. Instead of working hard to try and ensure an fitting finale to a fantastic season; he fell into the classic trap of jumping the gun and saw something that might well happen as something that was definitely going to happen.

The most defiant supporters of Arry cling onto to his achievements prior to this fiasco. They’re drunks clinging on to a lamppost.  It’s all about support, not illumination.

And Arry fans needs to get a grip. Not as in acknowledge they’re deluded, but in the manner they approach this whole mess. It’s an online debate. It’s discussion on a blog. On the Internet. Not people shouting abuse through player’s letterboxes at four in the morning.

Very fair criticism has been labelled, ‘vile abuse’ by the pompous who want to police people who don’t share their views. These clowns should be sending people like me flowers and fine wines as a thank you for diffusing the rage from spilling out onto the terraces.  And rage is what we’re talking about.

‘Oh, so called fans like you weren’t about when we had Santini and Francis and gawd knows who else …’ they dredge up. How is the fact it used to be awful in the past remotely relevant to what’s happening in the here and now? Do you, ‘laugh off’ a broken leg because whilst it hurts like hell, it’s not a patch on the heart attack you had a few years ago? I could weep.

Roy’s supposedly been had marathon meetings with the FA yesterday and an announcement is tipped to be made this afternoon. Roy would be potty to take the job. Stark raving mad. His spell at Liverpool saw him flirting with the Mental Health Act and why he now believes he could survive being repeatedly slung down the well of sorrow that is the British press is anyone’s guess.

Blackburn produced 3 points. Those points are banked and nobody can touch ’em. But Blackburn were gormless. We’ll be lucky indeed if our remaining three opponents are as kind.

What I’d like from Arry now are some statements of intent. Chelsea have just bought Marin who is a decent player. Arsenal are now being mentioned on an almost daily basis in the same breath as Vertonghen Spurs fans are easy to win round.

Stop peddling garbage, ‘I woz gunna sign Tevez, honest guv, we’ve been looking at Hazard.’ …I was going to marry a supermodel and I spent a hour yesterday looking for some keys. You are talking garbage. Stop it.

Ship in someone fresh for the back-line and stop talking to the press. Tell them you’re too busy training to stop. Stop dreaming away our season and maybe, just maybe you can get us out this mess that you got us into.

We’ll finish 4th, Chelsea will beat Bayern, that’s the Tottenham way. Ribery & Robben are even at each other’s throats, can’t believe it’s come to this, why couldn’t Barca get the job done. There is a real possibility I will cry if we miss out on Champs League.

Simon Harry Redknapps attitude towards our club has undermined the players the board the fans.
We are merely supporters Redknapp was paid to manage the team FFS.
If sending you players out on loan is managing them ..I may really get that dream job.

Despite his protestations to the contrary, HR must be utterly devastated by this obvious snub. His feelings will be a painful mixture of rejection, betrayal, humiliation and regret. He undoubtedly believed the Top Job was his; you could hear it in his interviews.
Harry is the media darling that allowed the press/ public/ players to blow so much smoke up his arse that he floated high above the day to day tedium of doing his job at Spurs to the very best of his ability.
However as the smoke began to seep back out and he began to descend back down to the mortal realms he realised that it had all been falsehood and vanity. While he had been writing his acceptance speech, the FA were hiring Woy.
In a strange way HR was bitten by the hand that fed him.

Lets face it, the predicament we find ourselves in (challenging for 4th or 3rd – what dark dark days we are having to endure) is not all of Harry’s making. Levy has clearly taken the decision to give Harry nothing until its clear he’ll be here next year.

Take away the Court case and the England thing and no doubt our reinforcement in summer and January would have been a lot more substantial. There has been substantial selling and only loan/short term replacements with the exception of Parker.

The options Harry has been left with are slim, and if you add the regular injury to Lennon to the mix then the tactical options are slimmer still…..VDV right, doesn’t work, he wonders too much. Sandro & Parker in CM, doesn’t work cos most teams park the bus and 2 DMs is overkill, Bale roaming works sometimes but not others, 442 makes us more potent up front but more exposed in the middle. These are not just Harry tactical deficiencies these are the limited options with the players we have.

Spurs tried to get Krasic & the deal was all wrapped up, but the player rejected a loan move (something he now regrets). That fell through late and may have made all the difference. We need that sort of cover and competition for places. What options do we have as cover for the key players…..Kranjcar, Pienaar (loaned out) Bentley (loaned) Falque (loaned) Townsend (loaned) and that’s it. One could blame Harry for sending these players out but does anyone really expect they’d make a difference.
Harry’s lack of rotation is borne out of poor understudies….Rest Bale, Modric, Adebayor Walker and play who?

Much of this is Levy’s decision making but his hands were tied as he would be a fool to give Harry 10s of millions only for him to be sent down / leave for England.

Finally, look how United imploded when Fergie stated his desire to retire….was that due to Fergie taking his eye off the ball….i very much doubt it…or was it due to the fact you give a player an excuse to slack off and they will take it.

Redknapp must take his share of the blame but it is by no means the main contributing factor to our recent poor form.

    • Spurstacus says:

Frankly I do think Fergie took his eye off the ball. Anything that a manager says or does that adversely affects the team has to be considered unprofessional and irresponsible. The fact that Ferguson didn’t retire supports that point. SAF re tightened his grip and UTD won the title back the following year. Harry may not have earned or get that opportunity.

    • melcyid says:

      pure conjecture!

      • devonshirespur says:

We all know Harry’s a Wheeler Dealer (everyone except Harry that is) …..of course he is not going to choose to get rid of players and bring in +30 year old players on 6 month deals…he would want the very best if given the choice. He clearly has not been given the choice as Spurs have sold nearly £40m worth of players in the last 2 windows and bought Parker & Coulibaly (£7m).

His other dealings have been Saha (no more or less successful than Pav) Nelson (proved to be decent cover and scored a crucial goal) and that’s your lot. I am not sure he can be criticised too much for these deals.

Either Spurs are in financial dire straits and pooling money from transfers….or Levy did not want to give the war chest to Harry given the uncertainty of his position. Given the form this half season he still may not want to give Harry the war chest!

You are far nearer to the truth than perhaps you realize-it’s either we’re in financial straights or that ENIC about to sell out (the latter,I think) or a 3rd option is or was, that this season was intended to be consolatory and a clearing out and re-building was on the cards but our run during Sept-Jan took the board by surprise?
