The Late Late Late One

Good evening.

From a erstwhile very reliable source and I see (before I am barked at by some child with an attention deficit disorder) also ‘on message’ with The Goat on Spurs Community to a certain extent…

Moutinho’s recent unchecked praise for the boy Boas looks like it weren’t just throwaway remarks. Word is that serious efforts on both sides are being made to make this happen.

Also the talk of Carvalho which will obviously split opinion is thought to be accurate. My guy in a refreshing expression of honesty says that he is less certain of this as – despite Modric doing the off – this is being negotiated as an entirely separate issue.

I am really liking the way this club is being run.

Carvalho isn’t coming to Tottenham, surely. I thought he was crap at Chelski, so why would we want him amongst us. He’s older than the fcuking manager so unless he’s the new ‘tea lady’ (sorry existing tea lady) why would Danny do business ???

I’m loving how the club is being run, and more so how the squad is being managed.
For a club such as ours, selling Defoe for say £12m IF you can re-invest wisely is very smart, as in 18 months his value will fall off a cliff. Also he’s not an easy fit any of the systems we play.
Not for the sake of Harry bashing, but to illustrate a change in direction – Harry said he was scared to sell Defoe last year is it would come back to haunt him. I understood what he was saying. But now he’s 29 (still with a good 2 years in him sure), but once his value falls away it’s gone. If there’s the opportunity to sell and re-invest in a Damiao, then that’s very smart.
The tensions with Harry is he felt he need to think short term to protect his corner. Not getting flak for selling Defoe and him banging in 20 goals, where as the issue is what’s in the best interests of the club over the next decade.
Pains me to say it, but same quandary with VDV. Brilliant player – but if another club is prepared to pay X and we can get a brilliant young player with it, you have a choice to make.
Harry was no mug in assessing players – but it’s clear his approach to managing the squad was at odds with Levys, and AVBs is better aligned. Whether you agree with it or not, it’s great to have the club pulling in the same direction.

Yeah, there’s a real sense of cohesion.

you are joking about selling Defoe right? Anyone with any sense and that pays attention to statistics can see that Defoe was by far the better forward in goals scored last season. He nearly Equaled Adebayor’s goals! yet for the majority of the season he was brought on in the last 10 minutes of every match. Defoe is a player that scores enough goals (given the game time) to be worth nearly £20m yet for some reason there isn’t a chance we will get over £10m for him. Getting rid of Defoe for Damiao is a terrible decision as that would leave us with still only 1 first team striker, and if he were to get injured or fail to make an impact we would all be crying about how we let Defoe, a proven Premier League goal scorer go.

I agree! Defoe should stay. He gives us another option. I seem to think I,m in the minority when itcomes to Ade! I don’t want him back!

If any of the alternative that have been touted
come in, then there’s a good chance Ade will
find himself on the bench more often than he may
be prepared to accept. An then I can see the
return of the notorious lazy, disruptive player.

If we him, for me he will be our biggest gamble!z

I see what you mean with Ade, he isn’t a great player, but he fits into our game, knows the club, scores goals..for £5m it’s a good deal I think. Still need another striker and keep jermain. Either damaio, remy or ba.

        • Jamie says:

What I love about Ade, and why I want him back, is how he plays with his back to goal, holding the ball up and linking play. Because he’s so strong (and quick enough) he occupies both centre backs, who have to play deep so he can’t get in behind. It gives them a problem, and creates space for Bale, VDV (+ Sig?) to play.
He got (roughly?) 19 goals and 10 assists in the league last year, and gives us that precious out ball when we’re under pressure. You can play it into his feet and the ball sticks. I remember standing up and yelling at the TV early last season “YES IT STICKS!”. The amount of times it used to come straight back with Crouch, Pav, Keane et all in 10/11 used to drive me round the bend.
I’d love him back, being realistic I think he’s the best player of his type we can get.

      • Jamie says:

Defoe is a divisive issue, but I wouldn’t say those that say keep him at all costs have the monopoly on sense.
He’s a good player, he scores goals – and has a value. But if you’re looking to build a cohesive title challenging squad, at the right price he becomes expendable. With two number 9s in – Ade + one other, he’s expendable. Ask yourself this – would any of last years Top 5 take him as one of their Top 2 strikers?
Imo Defoe is great coming of the bench against tired legs – especially when we’re leading or drawing away from home…when they leave space behind.
When teams sit back against us, he struggles unless it’s a 4-4-2. AVB has never (and I would think is never) going to play 4-4-2.
Defoe wasn’t happy being second choice striker last season, so you tell me – if you were to keep him (as his sell on value dwindles away in the next 18 months) what role would you have him play?

      You speak much sense

  • kennyid says:

Likin’ it, yeah, likin’ it. Feel Moutinho may well be on and Loris and Ade. Not absolutely and indisputably in the can yet but all feasible as opposed to total fantasy, as has often been the case in the past.
