Highlights? We Don’t Need No… Oh Hang On, Maybe We Do…

Put your ear to your machine and the sound you hear is me getting back into my box.

The came, they scored, they went home again. I really felt we were going to blow it. You know, a bit windy, a bit nippy. A bit not quite us.

I didn’t see any more than the highlights. I was toying with going, but I wouldn’t want to tar myself with the ‘real fan’ brush and so lose street cred with the bulk of my readers who are either house bound or incarcerated (Hey, easy there – just sharing some of the emails I get ).

So 3 points and my best wishes to ol’ Modders on his tummy tribulations. Here’s the MOTD highlights.

    Harry on Bex:

“He could be at home now sitting around the pool. I am sure he has a decent enough semi in Los Angeles but he is over here wanting to play football. Most footballers would want to be in Los Angeles.”

    Uh, decent semi?

I hate being the only person who ever says anything positive about Crouch (And believe me, it takes every ounce of my upbringing by the Sisters of St Gertrude the Generous of Genoa to keep trying)… BUT, he did do a bit more than just score the goal. He had, on his standards, a reasonably OK game.

He held the ball up reasonably well, tried to link up with the sadly misfiring JD, had a few good moments with VDV and worked hard defensively (Including an off the line-ish clearance).

Like everyone, I pray that he’s not a fixture for years to come and that we develop a better Plan A soon, like Saturday maybe, but credit where it’s due.

(Mutters prayers over crucifix and prepares to be shot down in flames)

In fairness to Crouch it’s hard to think of any other forward at any club who would have scored that goal yesterday.
Out-jumping Samba is a tough assignment.
Not sure why we played Lennon on left and VDV on right, when Azza is clearly better on the right and VDV is left footed.
Must win this weekend. What chance we stop Kevin Davies from scoring ?

Kill him now I would suggest (Davies, not Crouch)

        Although… :ermm:

Lennon managed a couple of shots recently playing on the right. One of them was a goal. He also made a great run to set up Defoe who promptly missed. If Bale had made that run they would have en saying what a wonderful player he is. Also VDV’s cross from the right with his left peg set up the goal. Maybe the idea is to make the midfield slightly narrow so we didn’t get stretched too much. Seemed to work. I thought Lennon and VDV played well.

I think the reason for the Lennon / VDV switch was down to Salgado at RB for Blackburn.

Whilst Salgado is undoubtedly a very experienced player, he is getting on in years now and lacks any pace. VDV lacks pace as well, so playing Lennon there really gave the opportunity for him to utilise his pace more than he normally does.

Lennon did beat him a number of times, but each time he went inside Salgado, rather than outside thus making it more difficult for him to cross the ball.

Steveo is onto it. This is called inverted wingers; all the rage on the continent. Biggest ‘name’ example I can think of is Bayern playing Ribery left and Robben right.

        • david says:

All very well but Lennon is far more dangerous on the right than the left so we have only 1 of our first choice mid-fielders available and play him in a position where he is less effective.

At least he wasn’t our worst forward for once.

Is an ass ass in anything like a shoe in? Or is it a reference to an adult Okey Cokey, (Hokey Pokey in the US), or a Dazza Bboy Bent goal?

  • seattlespursguy says:

Oh, bliss. Fox Soccer is showing “Classic” Champions League : Spurs v. Inter

    A&E was a class act
VDV seems to like the fight and is a born winner. I bet him and Gallas talk football a lot
